Conversion of archeological iron rust employing coconut husk lignin
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 8:126786. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126786. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRust powder collected from an archeological iron was evaluated by complementary analyses such as FTIR, XRD, XRF, and SEM/EDX. The analyses revealed that lepidocrocite (L) was the major component in the archeological iron. Coconut husk (CH) can be classified as a type of lignocellulosic biomass of renewable resources that are widely available, especially in coastal areas. In this research, the isolated lignin extracted from CH is being studied as a potential alternative for environmentally friendly applications. The is...

Solar heterogeneous photo-Fenton for complete inactivation of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium in secondary-treated wastewater effluent
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 8:140132. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, complete elimination of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium was achieved in 120 min using a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process under sunlight at pH 6.5 in distilled water. A face-centered composite central design 22 with one categoric factor and three replicates at the central point was used to evaluate the effect of iron (III) oxide concentration (0.8-3.4 mg L-1), H2O2 (2-10 mg L-1), and the type of iron oxide phase (maghemite and hematite) on the inactivation of both bacteria. The results showed tha...

Effects of high manganese-cultivated seedlings on cadmium uptake by various rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes
This study found various responses of Cd uptake and transporters to Mn-treated seedlings among rice genotypes, thus resulting in various Cd reductions. In the future, the microscopic transport processes of Cd within rice should be explored to deeply explain the genotypic variation.PMID:37688861 | DOI:10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115440

Design, Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of (Cyclopentadienone)iron Complexes Containing a Stereogenic Plane and a Stereogenic Axis
Chemistry. 2023 Sep 9:e202302533. doi: 10.1002/chem.202302533. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHerein, we report the synthesis and characterization of several chiral (cyclopentadienone)iron complexes (CICs) featuring either two (R)-BINOL-derived stereoaxes or a combination of one (R)-BINOL-derived stereoaxis and a stereogenic plane. The stereoplane-containing CICs were obtained as epimer mixtures, which were separated by flash column chromatography and assigned an absolute configuration based on XRD analysis, NMR and order of elution. The library was tested in the asymmetric hydrogenation of ketones showing good catalytic ac...

Assessment of source-oriented health risk associated with the oral ingestion of heavy metals in dust within an iron/steel smelting-affected area of the North China Plain
In this study, 78 outdoor windowsill dust samples were collected around a large-scale iron/steel smelter with more than 65 years of production history in the western North China Plain. Nine HMs were analysed to comprehensively assess the health risks by integrating Monte Carlo simulation, oral bioaccessibility, and source apportionment. Results showed serious pollution with Cd, Pb, and Zn based on their geo-accumulation index values and concentrations. Four potential sources including industrial sources (49.85%), traffic sources (21.78%), natural sources (20.58%), and coal combustion (7.79%) were quantitatively identified ...

Adrenomedullin, transcriptionally regulated by vitamin D receptors, alleviates atherosclerosis in mice through suppressing AMPK-mediated endothelial ferroptosis
CONCLUSION: VDR inhibits ox-LDL-induced endothelial dysfunction and ferroptosis by regulating ADM transcription and acting on AMPK signaling pathway. Overexpression of VDR in Apoe-/- mice reduced lipid deposition and plaque area in the thoracic aorta of atherosclerotic mice.PMID:37688783 | DOI:10.1002/tox.23958

Long-term stability and toxicity effects of three-dimensional electrokinetic remediation on chromium-contaminated soils
In this study, the long-term stability, leaching toxicity, bioavailability, and phytotoxicity of Cr in remediated soils were systematically analyzed to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the 3D EKR method. The results showed that the concentration of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) in the leachate of the 3D EKR system with sulfidated nano-scale zerovalent iron (S-nZVI) was more than 40% lower than those of the other 3D electrode groups, and the time required to reach the level III standard of groundwater quality criterion in China (0.05 mg/L, GB/T 14848-2017) was significantly shortened. The stabilization of Cr(VI...

Surfactants in water and wastewater (greywater): Environmental toxicity and treatment options
Chemosphere. 2023 Sep 7:140082. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.140082. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSurfactant, an emerging pollutant present in greywater, raises the toxicity levels in the water body. Soap, detergent, and personal care items add surfactant to greywater. Due to excessive washing and cleaning procedures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of surfactants in greywater has also increased. Considering the environmental toxicity and problems it creates during the treatment, it's essential to remove surfactants from the wastewater. This review intends to explain and address the environmental toxici...
