Electrospun polylactic acid nanofiber film modified by silver oxide deposited on hemp fibers for antibacterial fruit packaging
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 28:126569. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126569. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacterial and fungal contamination have become major factors in fruit spoilage and damage, posing a potential risk to human health. In this work, polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibers combined with Ag2O-hemp fibers for a good antimicrobial effect were developed and applied to antimicrobial fruit fresh-keeping packages. The results of molecular simulation calculations showed that the strength of hydrogen bonds between Ag2O and hemp fibers reached 45.522 kJ·mol-1, which proved that Ag2O and with hemp fibers formed a stable...

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Ameliorates Allergic Inflammation in HMC-1 Cells by Inactivating NF- κB and MAPK Signaling Pathways
Biochem Genet. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s10528-023-10492-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAllergic inflammation is the foundation of multiple allergic disorders, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. Mast cells are effector cells that initiate inflammatory response. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a furfural compound, is the heat-processed product of various fruit, foods, drinks, as well as some Chinese herbal medicines. 5-HMF was previously reported to inhibit mast cell activation. Our study aimed to explore the functions of 5-HMF in both phorbol 12-mystate 13-acetate (PMA) plus calcium ionophore (A23187)-induced allerg...

Solvent-free sonication of blackberries for the anthocyanin enrichment of juices obtained by pressing
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Aug 25;95(suppl 1):e20221106. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320221106. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTAn ultrasound pretreatment was used to increase anthocyanins content in blackberry juice. Whole fruits were inserted into a glass vessel without contact with any solvent, sonicated in an ultrasonic bath, and then pressed with a manual juicer. The experimental design showed that 7 min at 65% of ultrasound amplitude increased the anthocyanin content in juices from 31 to 56% for BRS Xingu, Guarani, and Xavante cultivars. Two major anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside were found in higher ...

The iconic cactus of the Caatinga dry forest, Cereus jamacaru (Cactaceae) has high sphingophily specialization and pollinator dependence
An Acad Bras Cienc. 2023 Aug 28;95(suppl 1):e20220460. doi: 10.1590/0001-3765202320220460. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCereus jamacaru is a cactus distributed in Northeastern Brazil, with high symbolic value to this region. However, the interaction, behavior and the role of pollinators remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate the reproductive biology, addressing the ecological significance of floral attributes, including details about floral signaling. The study was carried at three areas of the Caatinga, in 2015, 2017 and 2021. We analyzed the floral morphometry, volume and concentration of the nectar, and characteriz...

Protective effects of sinapic acid against lead acetate-induced nephrotoxicity: a multi-biomarker approach
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 30. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29410-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLead acetate (PbAc) is one of the top five most dangerous toxic heavy metals, particularly leading to kidney damage and posing serious health risks in both humans and animals. Sinapic acid (SNP) is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables that stands out with its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. This is the first study to investigate the effects of SNP on oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in PbAc-induced nephrotoxicit...
