Male kidney-specific BMAL1 knockout mice are protected from Potassium-deficient, high salt diet-induced blood pressure increases
Am J Physiol Renal Physiol. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1152/ajprenal.00126.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe circadian clock protein BMAL1 is a transcription factor that impacts kidney function, including blood pressure (BP) control. Previously, we showed that male, but not female, kidney-specific cadherin Cre positive BMAL1 knockout mice (KS-BMAL1 KO) exhibit lower BP compared to littermate controls. The goal of this study was to determine the BP phenotype and immune response in male KS-BMAL1 KO in response to a low potassium, high salt diet (LKHS). BP, renal inflammatory markers and immune cells were measured in male mic...

AEE alleviates ox-LDL-induced lipid accumulation and inflammation in macrophages
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 12;167:115486. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115486. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a chronic immune inflammatory disease. Aspirin eugenol ester (AEE) is a novel safe and non-toxic compound with many pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-thrombotic action. In order to investigate the effect of AEE on the inhibition of aortic lipid plaque formation and macrophage-derived foam cell formation induced by oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), in vivo atherosclerosis model by feeding ApoE-/- mice with a high-fat diet and foam cells format...

Intestinal microbiota: A bridge between intermittent fasting and tumors
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Sep 12;167:115484. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115484. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIntestinal microbiota and their metabolites are essential for maintaining intestinal health, regulating inflammatory responses, and enhancing the body's immune function. An increasing number of studies have shown that the intestinal microbiota is tightly tied to tumorigenesis and intervention effects. Intermittent fasting (IF) is a method of cyclic dietary restriction that can improve energy metabolism, prolong lifespan, and reduce the progression of various diseases, including tumors. IF can affect the energy meta...

Zinc intake, SLC30A8 rs3802177 polymorphism, and colorectal cancer risk in a Korean population: a case-control study
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our findings suggest an inverse association between dietary zinc intake and CRC risk, and this relationship may be modified by SLC30A8 rs3802177 polymorphism.PMID:37707576 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05381-y

Appearance comparison on Instagram: The impact of fitspiration and transformation imagery on young women's body satisfaction
Eat Behav. 2023 Sep 12;51:101812. doi: 10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101812. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFitspiration, or imagery of thin muscular individuals that displays their physiques while posing or exercising, is a popular type of content on Instagram which ostensibly exists to encourage individuals to engage in a healthy lifestyle. A subtype of fitspiration imagery, "transformation" imagery, depicts physical changes following a "lifestyle change" involving diet and exercise. Despite its intentions, fitspiration imagery largely promotes one idealized body type (the fit ideal) and can be accompanied by messages encouraging...

Confounding Effects of Tamoxifen: Cautionary and Practical Considerations for the Use of Tamoxifen-Inducible Mouse Models in Atherosclerosis Research
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we establish that tamoxifen administration results in decreased serum cholesterol, decreased plaque formation, and increased hepatic lipid accumulation. These alterations represent significant confounding variables in atherosclerosis research, and we urge future investigators to take these findings into consideration when planning and executing their own atherosclerosis experiments.PMID:37706321 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.123.319922

The effects of brief diet and anti-diet social media videos on body image and eating concerns among young women
Eat Behav. 2023 Sep 12;51:101811. doi: 10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101811. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe effects of photo-based platforms on body image concerns are well documented, yet it is unknown whether these effects replicate across video-based platforms such as TikTok. Thus, this experimental study aimed to examine the relationship between video-based platform use and body image. Women aged 18 to 21 (n = 421) were randomly assigned to watch two brief, consecutive TikTok videos in one of three conditions: (1) diet culture, (2) anti-diet, (3) neutral. Participants allocated to the anti-diet condition reported greater in...

Dietary intake in individuals with phenylketonuria: an integrative review
CONCLUSION: most individuals with PKU have low energy, protein and fiber intake, adequate lipid intake, and high carbohydrate intake. Metabolic control of the disease is still a challenge in all countries. Nutritional strategies to improve dietary nutritional composition and phenylalanine blood levels in individuals with PKU remain an urgent issue.PMID:37705455 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04579

Factors associated with academic performance in adolescents from La Rioja (Spain): lifestyle habits, health indicators, and sociodemographic factors
CONCLUSIONS: interventions aimed at combating academic failure should take into account the aforementioned associated factors, with special emphasis on the most vulnerable groups such as males, those with lower socioeconomic status, and those who follow unhealthy lifestyle habits.PMID:37705442 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04599

Effect of various dietary fructose concentrations on the gallstone formation process in mice
CONCLUSION: changes in plasma, liver and bile lipids were only observed at very high fructose concentrations diets. We conclude that fructose apparently does not alter the gallstone formation process in our experimental model.PMID:37705438 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04610
