In conclusion, an SBP level below 130 mmHg was found to be associated with longevity among older women. The longer SBP was controlled at a level between 110 and 130 mmHg, the higher the survival probability to age 90. Preventing age-related rises in SBP and increasing the time with controlled BP levels constitute important measures for achieving longevity. « Back to Top

Recent advances in anaplastic thyroid cancer management
Curr Opin Endocrinol Diabetes Obes. 2023 Jul 7. doi: 10.1097/MED.0000000000000823. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent developments in the diagnosis and management of patients with anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC).RECENT FINDINGS: An updated edition of the Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors was released by the World Health Organization (WHO), in which squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid are now a subtype of ATC. Broader access to next generation sequencing has allowed better understanding of the molecular mechanisms driving ATC and improved prognostication. BRAF-targete...

Fungal infections: Immune defense, immunotherapies and vaccines
Adv Drug Deliv Rev. 2023 Mar 14;196:114775. doi: 10.1016/j.addr.2023.114775. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInvasive fungal infection is an under recognized and emerging global health threat. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) released the first ever list of health-threatening fungi to guide research and public health interventions to strengthen global response to fungi infections and antifungal resistance. Currently, antifungal drugs only demonstrate partial success in improving prognosis of infected patients, and this is compounded by the rapid evolution of drug resistance among fungi species. The increased pre...

Highlights into historical and current immune interventions for cancer
Int Immunopharmacol. 2023 Feb 27;117:109882. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2023.109882. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmunotherapy is an additional pillar when combined with traditional standards of care such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery for cancer patients. It has revolutionized cancer treatment and rejuvenated the field of tumor immunology. Several types of immunotherapies, including adoptive cellular therapy (ACT) and checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs), can induce durable clinical responses. However, their efficacies vary, and only subsets of cancer patients benefit from their use. In this review, we address three goal...

EDEM2 is a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker and associated with immune infiltration in glioma: A comprehensive analysis
Front Oncol. 2023 Jan 16;12:1054012. doi: 10.3389/fonc.2022.1054012. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTGlioma is a highly common pathological brain tumor. Misfolded protein response, which is strongly associated with the growth of cancerous tumors, is mediated by the gene, endoplasmic reticulum degradation-enhancing alpha-mannosidase-like protein 2. However, this gene has not been linked to glioma. To assess the same, we used The Cancer Genome Atlas, Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas, and Genotype-Tissue Expression datasets. The gene was overexpressed in gliomas. This overexpression was linked to unfavorable clinical characteristics, suc...

Molecular pathology and clinical implications of diffuse glioma
Chin Med J (Engl). 2023 Jan 3. doi: 10.1097/CM9.0000000000002446. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe prognosis for diffusely infiltrating gliomas at World Health Organization (WHO) grade 2-4 remains dismal due to their heterogeneity. The rapid development of genome-wide molecular-profiling-associated studies has greatly promoted the accuracy of glioma classification. Thus, the latest version of the WHO classification of the central nervous system tumors published in 2021 has incorporated more molecular biomarkers together with histological features for the diagnosis of gliomas. Advanced usage of molecular pathology in clini...

Significant position of C-myc in colorectal cancer: a promising therapeutic target
Clin Transl Oncol. 2022 Aug 16. doi: 10.1007/s12094-022-02910-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is a malignant tumor initiating from the mucosa of the colorectum. According to the 2020 statistics from the World Health Organization, there are 10.0% CRC cases among all 19.3 million new cancers, followed by lung and breast cancer, and 9.4% CRC cases among all 9.9 million cancer deaths, ranking second. The population of CRC patients in China is large, and its incidence and mortality continue to increase each year. Despite the continuous development of surgical methods, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targete...
