Geriatric patient with neurological symptoms and prolonged aPTT
Inn Med (Heidelb). 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1007/s00108-023-01581-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 73-year-old man with dementia was referred to our clinic with hypernatremia and volume depletion. New-onset neurogenic dysphagia was likely the reason for both. The patient had chronic embolic strokes on the computed tomography (CT) images. Documentation from previous hospitalizations in different hospitals revealed a repeatedly prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT); 5 years prior, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome had already been suspected, but the necessary workup was never completed. We diagnosed the patie...

Vitamin D supplementation improves the therapeutic effect of mometasone on allergic rhinitis
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) using mometasone. A total of 140 patients with moderate and severe AR treated at our hospital between January 2017 and August 2020 were recruited as subjects for this study. The patients were randomly divided into control and experimental groups, with 70 patients in each group. Mometasone nasal spray was used in both groups, and vitamin D was administered to the experimental group for four weeks. The total nasal symptom scores (TNSS) and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) wer...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, September 11th 2023
This article reviews the current regulatory role of miR-7 in inflammation and related diseases, including viral infection, autoimmune hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and encephalitis. It expounds on the molecular mechanism by which miR-7 regulates the occurrence of inflammatory diseases. Finally, the existing problems and future development directions of miR-7-based intervention on inflammation and related diseases are discussed to provide new references and help strengthen the understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammation and related diseases, as well as the development of new strategies for clinical interventi...

Vitamin D: determinants of status, indications for testing and knowledge in a convenience sample of Irish adults
Br J Nutr. 2023 Oct 14;130(7):1144-1154. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523000168. Epub 2023 Feb 9.ABSTRACTVitamin D deficiency is common in Irish adults, though there is limited research on its determinants, knowledge of vitamin D or indications for testing. We aimed to explore the determinants of vitamin D status in adults and examine knowledge and reasons for testing. The study population comprised adults who had serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D tested by general practitioners request at a Dublin Hospital in 2020. Questionnaires detailing dietary intake, sun exposure, ethnicity, biophysical factors and vitamin D knowledge were sent to a...

Assessment of the oxidative status in mother-child couples from Seville (Spain): A prospective cohort study
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Aug 18;207:308-319. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.08.017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnancy requires a high demand of energy, which leads to an increase of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to assess the oxidative status in 200 couples of pregnant women-newborns at the time of delivery, for the first time, who gave birth in two University Hospitals from the province of Seville. Recruited women filled an epidemiological questionnaire with their demographic characteristics and dietary habits during pregnancy. At the time of delivery, both maternal and cord blood samples were coll...

Factors for the development of anemia in patients with newly introduced olaparib: A retrospective case-control study
This study investigated the clinical features of olaparib-induced anemia. Additionally, the role of folate or vitamin B12 in olaparib-induced anemia was examined. This retrospective case-control study included patients who received olaparib at Mie University Hospital between January 2018 and December 2020. Data were collected between initiation of olaparib and discontinuation of olaparib or till December 2021. We investigated the development of grade ≥ 3 anemia during olaparib administration for at least 1 year. We examined patients with grade ≥ 3 anemia considering the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), its association wi...

Association between the Mediterranean Diet and Vitamin C and the Risk of Head and Neck Cancer
Nutrients. 2023 Jun 23;15(13):2846. doi: 10.3390/nu15132846.ABSTRACTDiet may modulate the risk of head and neck cancer (HNC) through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. To date, there is limited evidence regarding the effects of the Mediterranean diet on HNC risk. The purpose of the study was to assess the association between Mediterranean diet adherence, type of diet, and vitamin C and the risk of HNC. A case-control study was conducted at the Dentistry Hospital, University of Barcelona, including 101 cases of HNC and 101 controls matched by age and sex. Dietary habits were assessed using a 14-question Mediterranea...

Hypothyroidism Complicated by Vitamin C and Thiamin Deficiency in Surgical Patients
Am Surg. 2023 Jun 5:31348231175098. doi: 10.1177/00031348231175098. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultiple vitamin deficiencies together with endocrinopathy may be encountered in individuals presenting with critical illness. Following the surprise postmortem diagnosis of concomitant scurvy, Wernicke, and hypothyroidism in an elderly woman presenting with a mix of atypical symptoms, patients considered at risk were tested for TSH, vitamin C, and thiamin levels. Between September 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, 801 vitamin C levels in 679 patients were measured in our rural hospital and 309 (39%) were found <0.4 mg/dL. In...
