Giant Cell Arteritis and Takayasu Arteritis: Are they a different spectrum of the same disease?
Publication date: Available online 23 April 2015 Source:Indian Journal of Rheumatology Author(s): Lorraine O'Neill , Cristina Ponte , Jan Sznajd , Anna P. Rodrigues , Benjamin Seeliger , Raashid A. Luqmani Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu Arteritis (TAK) are the two major forms of large vessel vasculitis (LVV). Traditionally GCA and TAK have been considered as two separate diseases based on a number of differences including age of onset, ethnicity, clinical features and vascular distribution. However, the realisation that large vessel involvement in GCA is more common than previously thought, has prompted the disc...

Rheumatoid arthritis, anti‐CCP positivity, and cardiovascular disease risk in the Women's Health Initiative
Conclusion: Among postmenopausal women, RA was associated with 1.5‐2.5 higher CVD risk, strongly associated with CV risk factors, joint pain severity, and inflammation, but similar for anti‐CCP+ and RF+. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Respiratory and otolaryngologic manifestations of giant cell arteritis.
CONCLUSIONS: It is important to recognize these atypical presentations because they may be the sole initial manifestation of the disease. Early suspicion and confirmation of the diagnosis of GCA can help to prevent more catastrophic consequences of unrecognized disease, including stroke and blindness. Epigenetic Aspects of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Abstract Autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune hepatitis, and inflammatory bowel disease have complex pathogeneses and the courses of events leading to these diseases are not well understood. The immune surveillance is a delicate balance between self and foreign as well as between tolerance and immune response. Exposure to certain environmental factors may impair this equilibrium, leading to autoimmune diseases, cancer, and the so-called “lifestyle diseases” such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, stroke, and obesity, among others. T...

Hip Osteoarthritis and the Risk of All‐Cause and Disease‐Specific Mortality in Older Women: A Population‐Based Cohort Study
ConclusionRHOA was associated with an increased risk of all‐cause and CVD mortality among older white women followed up for 16 years. Dissemination of evidence‐based physical activity and self‐management interventions for hip OA in community and clinical settings can improve physical function and might also contribute to lower mortality.

Rheumatoid arthritis: Link between RA and cardiovascular disease risk
Nature Reviews Rheumatology 11, 382 (2015). doi:10.1038/nrrheum.2015.77 Data from >160,000 postmenopausal women included in the Women's Health Initiative indicate that women with RA are at 1.5–2.5-fold higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality over 10 years compared with women without RA (outcomes assessed included coronary heart disease, stroke, CVD, fatal

Rheumatoid Arthritis, Anti–Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide Positivity, and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in the Women's Health Initiative
ConclusionAmong postmenopausal women, RA was associated with 1.5–2.5‐fold higher CVD risk. CVD risk was strongly associated with CVD risk factors, joint pain severity, and inflammation, but not with anti‐CCP positivity or RF positivity.

The effect of smoking on clinical and radiographic variables, and acute phase reactants in patients with ankylosing spondylitis
Abstract To investigate the association between smoking and clinical, inflammatory and radiographic parameters in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). One hundred and six tumour necrosis factor inhibitor naïve patients with AS were included in the study. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, Bath AS Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath AS Functional Index (BASFI) and modified Stroke AS Spine Score (mSASSS) were assessed cross-sectionally for each patient. Smoking history was obtained, and smoking pack years were calculated. Current smokers had significantly higher BASDAI (p < 0.001) ...

Osteoarthritis, comorbidity and pain: Their role in determining functional limitations in older populations (European project on Osteoarthritis)
Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that while comorbidity is strongly and independently associated to functional limitations, it does not affect the OA‐physical function association. Hip/knee OA is associated to self‐reported impairment in physical function, which was only partially mediated by pain. Its association to physical function, as evaluated by the walking test, was, instead, completely mediated by pain. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Intracerebral hemorrhage with a favorable outcome in a patient with childhood primary angiitis of the central nervous system
We present the case of a boy with cPACNS that previously suffered an ischemic stroke. At the age of 7 years and 10 months, he presented a sudden and severe headache, vomiting and reduction in consciousness level (Glasgow coma scale 7), requiring prompt tracheal intubation. Brain computed tomography demonstrated intraparenchymal hematoma in the right parieto-occipital lobe and a small focus of bleeding in the right frontal lobe, vasogenic edema, herniation of the uncus and a 10mm deviation to the left from the midline. C-reactive protein (9.2mg/dL) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen (202%) were elevated. Decompressive ...
