Patient Management and Clinical Outcomes Associated with a Recorded Diagnosis of Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease: The REVEAL-CKD Study

Concurrent Validity of Power From Three On-Water Rowing Instrumentation Systems and a Concept2 Ergometer
Conclusion: Potential negative error in mean power was evident for all devices and units, particularly EmPower. Stroke-to-stroke variation in power showed a lack of measurement sensitivity (apparent smoothing) that was minor for Peach but larger for the Concept2, whereas EmPower and Weba added random error. Peach is therefore recommended for measurement of mean and stroke power.

Clinical Outcomes Following Language-Specific Attention Treatment Versus Direct Attention Training for Aphasia: A Comparative Effectiveness Study.
Conclusions The results support the view that attention is allocated in ways that are particular to specific tasks rather than as a general resource that is allocated equivalently to all processing tasks. Domain-specific treatment for language deficits due to attentional impairment appears to be a suitable, if not preferable, approach for aphasia rehabilitation. Mangosteen: The Cancer-Fighting Superfruit
If you're a woman with a family history of breast cancer, your doctor may recommend you start taking a toxic chemo drug like tamoxifen to lower your risk of developing the disease. Even if you have no signs or symptoms of cancer. Tamoxifen is what's known as a chemopreventive agent. That's a fancy phrase that means it's something that prevents cancer from forming. But its track record isn't all that impressive. Trials found that for every 1,000 women who take the drugs, only 21 to 35 cases of cancer would be prevented. And the side effects are downright terrifying. Bone pain, blood clots, increas...

The normal ranges of cardiovascular parameters measured using the ultrasonic cardiac output monitor
This study aimed to (1) measure cardiovascular indices using USCOM in healthy adults aged 18–60 years; (2) combine these data with those for healthy children (aged 0–12), adolescents (aged 12–18), and the elderly (aged over 60) from our previously published studies in order to present normal ranges for all ages, and (3) establish normal ranges of USCOM‐derived variables according to both weight and age. This was a population‐based cross‐sectional observational study of healthy Chinese subjects aged 0.5–89 years in Hong Kong. USCOM scans were performed on all subjects, to produce measurements including strok...

Why Knowing Your Triglyceride Number Matters
Many of us can rattle off our latest cholesterol number at the drop of a hat. Keeping an eye on your cholesterol is important but there's another number you also should have memorized - your triglycerides. However, if asked about our triglyceride number, most of us have little to know idea what it is. That's too bad because our triglyceride number reveals quite a bit of how healthy we are or not. The good news is there are many steps we can take to get it in a healthier range starting today. What are triglycerides? Triglycerides (TG) are the most common type of fat in the body and are an important measure of heart health...

Georgia O'Keefe: Artistic and Culinary Pioneer
Pedernal Mountain. by guest blogger Pam Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, FACSM, best-selling author and expert on health, fitness, and nutrition On a recent trip to Santa Fe, I scheduled a visit Georgia O'Keefe's home and studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico. O'Keefe, known as the mother of American modernism, is most renowned for her extraordinary paintings of super-sized erotic flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. As I neared the property, I immediately spotted her frequently painted wooden ladder, leaning against a wall, its top rungs extending high above the rooftop. The ladder. Photo by Dr. Peeke. Stepping in...
