Manipal lifestyle modification score to predict major adverse cardiac events in post coronary angioplasty patients
ConclusionThere is an overall reduction in adherence to LSM on successive follow-ups and a significant association between the incidence of MACE and lack of adherence to LSM. MLSMS is a simple and effective evaluation tool in predicting MACE in this group of patients.

Motivational Interviewing to Support LDL-C Therapeutic Goals and Lipid-Lowering Therapy compliance in patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes (IDEAL-LDL) Study: Rationale and design.
We examined the effect of a patient-centered, physician-led motivational intervention following ACS on relevant secondary prevention aspects. METHODS: Design: The IDEAL-LDL is a single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial, conducted among patients hospitalized due to an ACS. Following discharge, all patients undergo a baseline assessment of lipid profile. Patients in the intervention group receive an in-person educational session and an informative leaflet, and also undergo two phone-based, motivational interviewing sessions at 1 and 6 months. These interventions emphasize on LDL-C goals, adherence to lipid-low...

Cardiovascular disease in Greece; the latest evidence on risk factors.
Authors: Michas G, Karvelas G, Trikas A Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant and ever-growing problem in Europe, accounting for nearly 45% of all deaths and leading to significant morbidity. Greece is one of the European Union member states that top the list of deaths due to ischemic heart disease and stroke, a fact that is mainly attributed to unfavorable changes in modifiable risk factors. The aim of this review is to examine the latest evidence on the most important CVD risk factors. According to studies conducted during the last two decades, the prevalence of arterial hypertension, hypercholes...

The Impact of Diet and Lifestyle on Atrial Fibrillation
AbstractPurpose of ReviewAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia in humans, affecting more than 33 million people globally. Its association with complex, resource intensive medical conditions such as stroke, heart failure and dementia have had profound impacts across existing health care structures. The global prevalence of AF has enjoyed significant growth despite significant improvement in our armamentarium for arrhythmia treatment.Recent FindingsEfforts aimed at curtailing the incidence, prevalence, or progression of AF have prompted re-evaluation of traditional frameworks for understand...

Lipoprotein(a) —It Is Risky, but What Do We Do About It?
AbstractPurpose of ReviewLipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a pro-inflammatory, pro-thrombotic, and pro-atherogenic lipoprotein particle. Lp(a) binds and transports oxidized phospholipids in the bloodstream. It is one of the strongest genetic risk factors for coronary artery disease, stroke, and calcific aortic valve stenosis.Recent FindingsElevated Lp(a) levels, or hyperlipoproteinemia(a), is associated with cardiovascular outcomes even in high-risk individuals who achieve their low-density lipoprotein cholesterol target with statins. Lifestyle modification therapy and dietary supplements have little impact on plasma Lp(a) levels....

Primordial prevention of cardiovascular disease: Several challenges remain
The concept of primordial prevention, preventing the development of cardiovascular risk factors, has been re-emphasized by the American Heart Association (AHA) which has developed a simplified 7-item tool (body mass index, smoking status, diet, physical activity, blood pressure, blood cholesterol and glycaemia) to help promote cardiovascular health (CVH) in the population [1] (Table 1). The AHA's goal was to increase overall CVH in the US population by 20% by 2020 while reducing death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke by 20%.

Effects of dual angiotensin type 1 receptor/neprilysin inhibition vs. angiotensin type 1 receptor inhibition on target organ injury in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat
Conclusion: The dual angiotensin II type 1 receptor/neutroendopeptidase inhibition significantly increased atrial natriuretic peptide level and reduced BP. Complete prevention of stroke was achieved in this model. The ability of sacubitril/valsartan to reduce organ damage progression was superior to that of valsartan alone. ARNi may represent a highly effective therapeutic agent to protect from target organ damage development in hypertension.

Patients ’ Priorities for Oral Anticoagulation Therapy in Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation: a Multi-criteria Decision Analysis
DiscussionAlthough the relative impact of convenience on therapy value is small, patients have different preferences for options within convenience criteria. Besides considerations on safety and effectiveness, physicians should also discuss attributes of convenience with patients, as it can be assumed that alignment to patient preferences in drug prescription and better patient education could result in higher adherence.

Vegetable Protein Intake was Inversely Associated with Cardiovascular Mortality in A 15-Year Follow-Up Study of A General Japanese Population.
CONCLUSIONS: Vegetable protein intake may prevent future CVD, particularly in nonhypertensive subjects in the Japanese population. However, further studies are necessary to examine the biological mechanisms of this effect. PMID: 30089755 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
