Level of Blood Pressure Control and Cardiovascular Events SPRINT Criteria Versus the 2014 Hypertension Recommendations
BackgroundBlood pressure (BP) targets from the SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) differ from targets of the 2014 hypertension (HTN) recommendations of the Eighth Joint National Committee.ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to estimate the proportion of hypertensive adults with who would meet BP goals under the SPRINT criteria and under the 2014 recommendations, and to determine related effects on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.MethodsWe used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2008 to 2013 (n = 13,346), as well as the Korean National Health Insurance Service...

Incidence and Risk Factors for Atrial Fibrillation in Korea: the National Health Insurance Service Database (2002-2010).
CONCLUSION: Incidence of AF increased with age and was higher in men than in women. A larger proportion of AF events was attributable to hypertension than to other co-morbidities. PMID: 27482260 [PubMed]

Thromboembolic, Bleeding, and Mortality  Risks of Rivaroxaban and Dabigatran in Asians With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation
BackgroundIt is unclear whether the non –vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant agents rivaroxaban and dabigatran are superior to warfarin for efficacy and safety outcomes in Asians with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF).ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to compare the risk for thromboembolic events, bleeding, and mortality associated with rivaroxaban and dabigatran versus warfarin in Asians with NVAF.MethodsA nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted of consecutive patients with NVAF taking rivaroxaban (n  = 3,916), dabigatran (n = 5,921), or warfarin (n = 5,251) using data collected from the Taiwan...

The Trends of Atrial Fibrillation-Related Hospital Visit and Cost, Treatment Pattern and Mortality in Korea: 10-Year Nationwide Sample Cohort Data.
CONCLUSION: During the last decade, AF-related hospitalization and outpatient clinic visits have increased with the increase of many other comorbidities, whereas the rate of anticoagulation did not improved. Although mortality in patients with AF showed a modest decrease from 2004 to 2013, proper anticoagulation therapy is warranted for the improvement of public health. Insurance, self-reported medication adherence and LDL cholesterol: The REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study
Despite efforts to increase health insurance coverage in the US, in 2015 29 million American adults were uninsured [1]. A majority of these individuals are under 64years old, racial minorities or have lower socioeconomic status [1]. Lack of health insurance is associated with greater barriers to preventive services [2] and treatment of both acute and chronic illnesses [3] resulting in worse reported health status [4]. Being uninsured also adversely impacts medication adherence [5] and the control of cardiovascular risk factors [6].

Abstract 043: Health Insurance and the Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: The association of health insurance with CVD incidence varied by insurance group, and private insurance was associated with a lower risk of incident CVD. Further exploration of the features of health insurance coverage that impact CVD incidence may facilitate improvements in the primary prevention of CVD.

Demographics, treatment and outcomes of atrial fibrillation in a developing country: the population-based TuRkish Atrial Fibrillation (TRAF) cohort
ConclusionThe TRAF cohort is the first population-based, whole-country cohort of AF epidemiology, quality of care and outcomes. It provides a unique opportunity to study the patterns, causes and impact of treatments on the incidence and outcomes of AF in a developing country.

Abstract P173: Target Blood Pressure in Elderly Hypertensive Patients: A Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Examinee Cohort Study Session Title: Onsite Poster Competition I With Reception
This study used the National Health Insurance Service Health examinee Sample Cohort. We selected subjects who were over the age of 60 years and who had received a newly diagnosis of hypertension (Korean Classification of Disease [KCD] codes I10–I13) from 2003 to 2006. Subjects who had previous major cardiovascular (CV) events, such as heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, or end stage renal disease (ESRD) were excluded. The remaining 25,858 individuals were divided into three groups; 1) mean systolic blood pressure (SBP)

Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors and Risk of Heart Failure in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Population-Based Cohort Study Original Articles
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that DPP-4i use did not increase the risk of HF compared with sulfonylurea. In addition, the risks for cardiovascular outcomes were not elevated in DPP-4i–treated patients compared with sulfonylurea-treated patients.

The Use Pattern and Clinical Impact of New Antiplatelet Agents Including Prasugrel and Ticagrelor on 30-day Outcomes after Acute Myocardial Infarction in Korea: Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Data.
CONCLUSION: The use of new antiplatelet agents is rapidly increasing, and they have been used more commonly than clopidogrel since 2015. We demonstrated that new antiplatelet agents have a favorable effect on reducing 30-day mortality in AMI patients in Korea. PMID: 29035430 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular and Bleeding Risks in Acute Myocardial Infarction Newly Treated With Ticagrelor vs. Clopidogrel in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world AMI Taiwanese patients, ticagrelor seemed to offer better anti-ischemic protection than clopidogrel, without an increase in the rate of major bleeding. A large-scale randomized trial is needed to assess the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor in East Asian AMI patients. PMID: 29081474 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
