Interesting study re coronaviruses
This study basically shows what Wuhan Institute of Virology was up to in 2015 (approved and funded by NIH and NIAID). The virus they created is eerily similar to COVID -19. Basically what they created was a hybrid virus composed of the original SARS virus with a spike protein of a bat coronavirus. The original... Read more

Beneficial Effect of Prone Positioning During Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Coronavirus Disease 2019*
CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights that prone positioning during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for refractory coronavirus disease 2019-related acute respiratory distress syndrome is associated with reduced mortality. Given the observational nature of the study, a randomized controlled trial of prone positioning on venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is needed to confirm these findings.

Prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences in a Pediatric Emergency Department: Support for Trauma-Informed Pediatric Emergency Care
Conclusions Adverse childhood experience exposure in this population matched the prevalence reported in the national population. Our results suggest that this group is particularly important when mitigating these risk factors for long-term adverse health outcomes. Adverse childhood experience exposure did not appear to impact recidivism in a period of unprecedented low ED volumes during the coronavirus disease pandemic.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on critical care utilization in Japan: a nationwide inpatient database study
ConclusionsThe ICU and HDU bed capacity did not increase while their bed occupancy decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. There was no change in clinicians ’ decision-making to forego ICU/HDU care for selected patients, and there was no progress in the centralization of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

Critical care management of adults with community-acquired severe respiratory viral infection
AbstractWith the expanding use of molecular assays, viral pathogens are increasingly recognized among critically ill adult patients with community-acquired severe respiratory illness; studies have detected respiratory viral infections (RVIs) in 17 –53% of such patients. In addition, novel pathogens including zoonotic coronaviruses like the agents causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019 nCoV) are still being identified. Patients with severe RVIs requiring ICU care present typically with hypoxemic respiratory failure. Oseltamivir is the ...

Objectives: To describe the characteristics and outcomes associated with concomitant renal and respiratory failure in patients with critical coronavirus disease 2019. Design, Setting, and PATIENTS: This is a case series of patients from a U.S. healthcare system in New York City. All adult patients (≥ 18 yr) admitted to the hospital with positive coronavirus disease 2019 testing between March 10, 2020, and March 31, 2020, who required mechanical ventilatory support were included. What COVID-19 Teaches Us About Implicit Bias in Pediatric Health Care
ConclusionsThe additional strain on provider resources, staff, and supplies created by COVID-19 may exacerbate providers ’ susceptibility to implicit bias and contribute to health disparities. Pediatric psychologists are encouraged to recognize implicit biases in themselves and colleagues and promote identified strategies to reduce the impact of implicit bias on perpetuating health disparities in marginalized youth and families.

Impact of Digital Technologies on Clinical Care for Adults with Cystic Fibrosis
Semin Respir Crit Care Med DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1758730The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic accelerated the implementation of digital technologies, which have now become embedded as essential tools for the management of chronic disease, including cystic fibrosis (CF). Despite subsequent easing of restrictions and because of improved clinical stability resulting from the introduction of highly effective modulator therapy, digital technologies including video and telephone consultations and remote monitoring are likely to remain integral to the future delivery of CF health care. In this article, we explore some of the key de...
