Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 4405: Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Oral Cavity, Oropharynx, and Larynx: A Scoping Review of Treatment Guidelines Worldwide
Maria Paula Curado Head and neck cancer (HNC) treatments have been based on single or multimodal therapies with surgery, radiotherapy (RT), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. However, treatment recommendations among countries may differ due to technological/human resources and usual local practices. This scoping review aims to identify, compare, and map the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for treating squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and larynx worldwide. A search strategy on global CPGs for HNC was performed by using five electronic databases and grey literature. CPGs were selected for ...

Identification and characterisation of novel potential phospho-acceptor sites in HPV-16 E7
In this study, we show that HPV16 E7 can be phosphorylated by casein kinase I (CKI) and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3). This principal phosphorylation occurs at threonine residues 5 and 7 with a more minor role for residues 19-20 in the N-terminal region of 16 E7. Intriguingly, whilst mutational analyses suggest that residues 5 and 7 may be dispensable for the transformation of primary baby rat kidney cells by E7, intact residues 19 and 20 are required. Furthermore, negative charges at these residues (TT19-20DD) enhance the pRb-E7 interaction and cells display increased proliferation and invasion capacities. Using a pro...

"Knowing that I had HPV, I literally just shut down": A qualitative exploration of the psychosocial impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) in women living with mental health conditions
CONCLUSIONS: Receiving an HPV-positive result at cervical screening appears to be a distressing experience for women with co-morbid mental health conditions. Future hypothesis-driven research is needed to confirm findings and develop effective interventions to reduce psychosocial burden.PMID:37658582 | DOI:10.1111/bjhp.12688

Whole-genome CpG-resolution DNA Methylation Profiling of HNSCC Reveals Distinct Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis for Fine-scale HPV+ Cancer Subtypes
This study revealed that the previously observed hypermethylation of HPV(+) HNSCC is due solely to the IMU subtype, illustrating the importance of fine-scale subtype analysis in such a heterogeneous disease. Particularly, IMU has significantly higher methylation of transposable elements, which can be tested as a prognosis biomarker in future translational studies.PMID:37654626 | PMC:PMC10467604 | DOI:10.1158/2767-9764.CRC-23-0009

Economic burden of cancer attributable to modifiable risk factors in Japan
This study aimed to estimate the economic burden of cancer attributable to major lifestyle and environmental risk factors in Japan in 2015. We evaluated the economic cost of cancer attributable to modifiable risk factors from a societal perspective. We obtained the direct medical costs for 2015 from the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan, and estimated the indirect costs of premature mortality and of morbidity due to cancer using the relevant national surveys in Japan. Finally, we estimated the economic cost of cancer associated with lifestyle and environmental risk factors. ...
