Pediatric Spinal Subdural Abscesses: A Report of Three Consecutive Patients
Conclusions: Drainage followed by appropriate antibiotics is the optimal treatment for SSAs. Early diagnosis and urgent surgical treatment are essential for a good prognosis. All surgically treated SSA patients with neurological deficits were rehabilitated with physical therapy postoperatively.Pediatr Neurosurg

The pathogenic characteristics and influencing factors of health care-associated infection in elderly care center under the mode of integration of medical care and elderly care service: A cross-sectional study
The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of pathogenic bacteria in hospitalized patients in elderly care centers under the mode of integration of medical care and elderly care service, and explore the influencing factors to reduce the health care-associated infection rate of hospitalized patients. A total of 2597 inpatients admitted to elderly care centers from April 2018 to December 2019 were included in the study. The etiology characteristics of health care-associated infections (HCAI) was statistically analyzed, univariate analysis, and multivariate logistic regression analysis method were used to analyz...

Low Treatment Rates of Parasitic Diseases with Standard-of-Care Prescription Drugs in the United States, 2013-2019
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2022 Aug 22:tpmd220291. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.22-0291. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo assess appropriate drug treatment of parasitic diseases in the United States, we examined the treatment rates of 11 selected parasitic infections with standard-of-care prescription drugs and compared them to the treatment rates of two more common bacterial infections (Clostridioides difficile and streptococcal pharyngitis). We used the 2013 to 2019 IBM® MarketScan® Commercial Claims and Encounters and MarketScan® Multi-State Medicaid databases, which included up to 7 years of data for approximately 88 million and 17 m...

Surgical Indications and Outcomes of Postmeningitis Subdural Collection in Infants: Single Tertiary Care Center Experience
Conclusions Persistent fever, seizures, and bulging fontanel, in the presence of PMSC, were found to be the indications for surgical intervention in PMSC. Drainage of PMSC and continuation of antibiotics is a safe and effective modality for treatment in PMSC, with a reasonable outcome and acceptable rate of morbidity and mortality. Craniotomy should be reserved for those with thick pus collection, as burr hole surgery can be used to achieve the goal in the majority of patients. Pulmonary and Non-Pulmonary Sepsis Differentially Modulate Lung Immunity Towards Secondary Bacterial Pneumonia: A Critical Role for Alveolar Macrophages
In conclusion, polymicrobial peritonitis and bacterial pneumonia conferred susceptibility or resistance to secondary Gram-negative pulmonary infection, respectively. Immune patterns in post-CLP lungs argue for a TLR2-dependent crosstalk between T-regs and alveolar macrophages, as an important regulatory mechanism in post-septic lung defense.PMID:36883953 | DOI:10.1165/rcmb.2022-0281OC

Effects of peripheral benzodiazepine receptor ligand Ro5-4864 in four animal models of acute lung injury
Conclusions: These results have demonstrated, for the first time, a protective effect of Ro5-4864 on experimental ALI induced by ANTU, LPS, and CLP. Ro5-4864 might be a useful therapeutic agent for lung diseases, including ALI, in intensive care patients.

Study of clinical profile of rotaviral gastroenteritis among patients admitted in a tertiary care hospital
Conclusion This study documents the high incidence of rotaviral diarrhea in our population. It also highlights the fact that rotaviral diarrhea predominantly occurs in younger children, particularly infants. Early health care access and good nutritional status probably accounted for the mild disease in our population.

Pediatric Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Los Angeles, California, a High-prevalence Region in the United States
Conclusions:This report documents the appearance of highly resistant Gram-negative pathogens in a vulnerable patient population at a pediatric tertiary referral center in a major US metropolitan area. Detailed understanding of the distribution and spread of CRE is essential for the timely detection and containment of these perilous pathogens.

Epidemiology and Outcome of Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock in Surgical Intensive Care Units in Northern Taiwan
Abstract: Severe sepsis remains the leading cause of mortality in the critically ill. Local epidemiological studies on sepsis are of paramount importance to increase our knowledge about sepsis features and to improve patient care and prognosis. Adult patients (≥20 years) admitted to the surgical intensive care units with severe sepsis or septic shock from 2009 to 2010 were retrospectively retrieved and analyzed. The primary outcome of interest was 28-day mortality. Of 7795 admissions, 536 (6.9%) patients had severe sepsis. The most common sites of infection were the respiratory tract (38%) and abdomen (33%). Gram-negativ...
