Infusing Motor Learning Research Into Neurorehabilitation Practice: A Historical Perspective With Case Exemplar From the Accelerated Skill Acquisition Program.
We describe a principle-based intervention for neurorehabilitation termed the Accelerated Skill Acquisition Program that we developed. This approach emphasizes integration from a broad set of scientific lines of inquiry including the contemporary fields of motor learning, neuroscience, and the psychological science of behavior change. What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births. The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. A brief review of motor imagery and bimanual coordination
Motor imagery is increasingly being used in clinical settings, such as in neurorehabilitation and brain computer interface (BCI). In stroke, patients lose upper limb function and must re-learn bimanual coordination skills necessary for the activities of daily living. Physiotherapists integrate motor imagery with physical rehabilitation to accelerate recovery. In BCIs, users are often asked to imagine a movement, often with sparse instructions.
