Risk factors for osteoporosis among postmenopausal women in a Nigerian teaching hospital
CONCLUSION: We recommend regular bone mineral density screening of postmenopausal women at the primary care level for early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis to prevent fragility fractures.PMID:37636158 | PMC:PMC10451596 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2193_21

A common 18F-FDG PET radiomic signature to predict survival in patients with HPV-induced cancers
Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Aug 26. doi: 10.1007/s00259-023-06320-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLocally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) and anal and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC and OPSCC) are mostly caused by oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV). In this paper, we developed machine learning (ML) models based on clinical, biological, and radiomic features extracted from pre-treatment fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG PET) images to predict the survival of patients with HPV-induced cancers. For this purpose, cohorts from five institutions were used: two cohorts o...

Radiologic Features of T10 Paravertebral Muscle Sarcopenia: Prognostic Factors in COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: Easy to obtain and accurately calculated, radiologic features can provide a reliable alternative to laboratory methods for predicting survival in COVID-19. Thoracic muscles' CSA measurement in the level of the T10 vertebra, an acclaimed prognostic imaging assessment that relates directly to CT-SS and inflammatory markers in COVID-19 pneumonia, is a fairly specific tool for survival prognosis.PMID:37575354 | PMC:PMC10416190 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4963

Do All Roads to Full Participation? Examining Trajectories of Clinical Educators in Graduate Medical Education through Situated Learning Theory
Teach Learn Med. 2023 Aug 7:1-11. doi: 10.1080/10401334.2023.2230188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhenomenon: As new faculty members begin their careers in Graduate Medical Education, each begins a journey of Professional Identity Formation from the periphery of their educational communities. The trajectories traveled vary widely, and full participation in a given educational community is not assured. While some medical school and post-graduate training programs may nurture Professional Identity Formation, there is scant support for faculty. To date, the trajectories that Graduate Medical Education faculty travel, what m...

Evaluation of a 3D-printed hands-on radius fracture model during teaching courses
CONCLUSION: The 3D-printed hands-on radius fracture model proved to be an effective teaching tool for enhancing students' understanding of fracture anatomy. The combination of 3D models with the traditional imaging methods improved students' ability to classify fractures and allocate postoperative images correctly.PMID:37524864 | DOI:10.1007/s00068-023-02327-4

Robert Tigerstedt and the Discovery of Renin
Exp Clin Transplant. 2023 Jun;21(Suppl 2):62-66. doi: 10.6002/ect.IAHNCongress.15.ABSTRACTThe year 2022 marks the 125th anniversary of the discovery of the first element of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. The importance of this event on the further development of nephrology, cardiology, and endocrinology left us compelled to reminisce about it and its main author, Robert Tigerstedt (1853-1923), who was one of Scandinavia's most famous scientists. He studied medicine at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His doctoral dissertation On the Mechanical Stimulation of the Nervous System and 10 other original publicati...

Thinking on Your Feet Well: Building Adaptive Expertise in Learners Using Simulation
On this episode of the Academic Medicine Podcast, Sam Clarke, MD, MAS, and Jon Ilgen, MD, PhD, join host Toni Gallo to discuss the importance of teaching adaptive expertise to prepare learners for the types of complex cases they will encounter in clinical practice. This conversation also covers what adaptive expertise is, how simulation can be used to foster this skill in learners, and the complementary relationship between performance-oriented cases and adaptive cases in health professions education. This episode is now available through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and anywhere else podcasts are available. ...

Meckel's Diverticulum Causing Small Bowel Intussusception in Third Trimester Pregnancy, a Case Report
J Educ Teach Emerg Med. 2020 Jan 15;5(1):V4-V7. doi: 10.21980/J87H19. eCollection 2020 Jan.ABSTRACTIntestinal obstruction complicating pregnancy is a surgical emergency associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality for both the mother and fetus. This case report discusses the presentation and treatment of a young female in her third trimester of pregnancy at a repeat visit to the emergency department (ED) with right-sided abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with ileal intussusception secondary to a Meckel's diverticulum with associated small bowel obstruction (SBO) seen on computerized tomography (CT) imaging. ...

Improving diagnosis of pulmonary mucormycosis: leads from a contemporary national study of 114 cases
Chest. 2023 Jul 5:S0012-3692(23)00946-7. doi: 10.1016/j.chest.2023.06.039. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) is a life-threatening invasive mold infection. Diagnosis of mucormycosis is challenging and often delayed, resulting in higher mortality.RESEARCH QUESTION: Are the disease presentation of PM and contribution of diagnosis tools influenced by the patient underlying condition?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: All PM cases from six French teaching hospitals between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were defined according to updated EORTC/MSG criteria with the addition of diab...
