Racial-Ethnic Disparities in Acute Stroke Care in the Florida-Puerto Rico Collaboration to Reduce Stroke Disparities Study Epidemiology
We examined race‐ethnic disparities in acute stroke performance metrics in a voluntary stroke registry among Florida and Puerto Rico Get With the Guidelines‐Stroke hospitals. Methods and ResultsSeventy‐five sites in the Florida Puerto Rico Stroke Registry (66 Florida and 9 Puerto Rico) recorded 58 864 ischemic stroke cases (2010–2014). Logistic regression models examined racial‐ethnic differences in acute stroke performance measures and defect‐free care (intravenous tissue plasminogen activator treatment, in‐hospital antithrombotic therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, discharge antithrombotic therapy, a...

Statins and the risks of stroke recurrence and death after ischemic stroke: The Fukuoka Stroke Registry
This study aimed to elucidate whether prescribed doses of statins reduce the risks of cerebrovascular events (CVEs: stroke recurrence or transient ischemic attack) and all-cause mortality in a cohort of Japanese patients with first-ever ischemic stroke. Methods: The 2822 eligible patients registered in the Fukuoka Stroke Registry with first-ever acute ischemic stroke from June 2007 to February 2011 were classified into statin users (n = 993) and non-users (n = 1829) at discharge, and followed up until March 2012. We assessed the cumulative risks of CVE and all-cause mortality by the Kaplan–Meier method, and calculated...

Impact of Increased Early Statin Administration on Ischemic Stroke Outcomes: A Multicenter Electronic Medical Record Intervention Stroke
Conclusions A simple EMR change increased early statin administration in ischemic stroke and was associated with improved clinical outcomes. This is, to our knowledge, the first EMR intervention study to show that a modification of an electronic order set resulted in improved clinical outcomes.

PCSK9 Loss-of-Function Variants, Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke: Data From 9 Studies of Blacks and Whites Original Articles
Conclusions— PCSK9 LOF variants were associated with lower LDL-C and coronary heart disease incidence. PCSK9 LOF variants were not associated with stroke risk.

Pravastatin Reduces the Risk of Atherothrombotic Stroke when Administered within Six Months of an Initial Stroke Event.
CONCLUSIONS: Pravastatin is likely to reduce atherothrombotic stroke in patients enrolled within 6 months after stroke onset. However, the clinical efficacy for prevention of recurrent stroke was not conclusive with earlier statin treatment. PMID: 28924103 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of stroke in genetically verified familial hypercholesterolemia: A prospective matched cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: No significant excess risk of incident total and ischemic stroke in FH, and no difference in total stroke risk among the FH population with low, intermediate, and high statin exposure were observed. The observed relationship between FH and hemorrhagic stroke was no longer significant after adjusting for use of anti-thrombotic medication.PMID:36084445 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2022.08.015

Clinical Effectiveness of Statin Therapy after Ischemic Stroke: Primary Results from the Statin Therapeutic Area of the Patient-Centered Research into Outcomes Stroke Patients Prefer and Effectiveness Research (PROSPER) Study.
CONCLUSIONS: -In older ischemic stroke patients who were not taking statins at the time of admission, discharge statin therapy was associated with lower risk of MACE and nearly a month more home-time during the 2-year period post-hospitalization. PMID: 26246175 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Control of main risk factors after ischaemic stroke across Europe: data from the stroke-specific module of the EUROASPIRE III survey
Conclusion The EUROASPIRE III stroke-specific module shows that secondary prevention and risk factor control in patients after ischaemic stroke need to be improved in four European centres at the time of the study since about half of patients are not achieving risk factor targets defined in European guidelines.

Reduction in High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels in Patients with Ischemic Stroke by Statin Treatment: Hs-CRP Sub-Study in J-STARS.
CONCLUSION: In non-cardiogenic ischemic stroke, pravastatin treatment may reduce vascular inflammation as assessed by Hs-CRP, and higher Hs-CRP levels appeared to increase the risk of recurrent stroke and vascular events. PMID: 28302952 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association Between Intensity of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Reduction With Statin-Based Therapies and Secondary Stroke Prevention: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study suggests that the benefits and risks of more intensive LDL-C-lowering statin-based therapies for recurrent stroke risk reduction might be more favorable than the benefits and risks of less intensive LDL-C-lowering statin-based therapies, especially for patients with evidence of atherosclerosis.PMID:35188949 | DOI:10.1001/jamaneurol.2021.5578

Dynamic changes of carotid atherosclerosis and their relations with stroke recurrence in patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack
CONCLUSION: Plaque progression occurred in 46% of stroke or TIA patients. Plaque progression was significantly associated with clinical stroke recurrence. Plaque regressed in 6.5% of patients. Patients with regression were younger than those without.PMID:35996235 | DOI:10.2174/1567202619666220822141804

Patient-Centered Research into Outcomes Stroke Patients Prefer and Effectiveness Research (PROSPER): Implementing the Patient-Driven Research Paradigm to Aid Decision Making in Stroke Care
Conclusions PROSPER is a patient-centered outcomes research study guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community. By addressing knowledge gaps in treatment uncertainties through comparative effectiveness research, PROSPER has the potential to improve decision-making in stroke care and patient outcomes reflecting individual patient preferences, needs, and values.
