Urine Arsenic and Arsenic Metabolites in U.S. Adults and Biomarkers of Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Endothelial Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Study
Conclusion:
In a cross-sectional study of U.S. adults, we observed some positive associations of uAs and toenail As concentrations with biomarkers potentially relevant to CVD pathogenesis and inflammation, and evidence of a higher capacity to metabolize inorganic As was negatively associated with a marker of oxidative stress. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP2062

Serum persistent organic pollutants levels and stroke risk.
Abstract
Knowledge of environmental risk factors for stroke and their role are limited. We performed a case-cohort study to evaluate the association between serum persistent organic pollutants (POPs) level and stroke risk. 526 subcohort members and 111 stroke incidence cases were identified from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II. Serum levels of POPs were measured using gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry. The hazard ratios (HRs) for stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic, and all stroke types) were estimated using the weighted Cox regression model. Age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, physical a...

FDA clears AliveCor ’ s KardiaBand ECG for Apple Watch
AliveCor said today that the FDA cleared its KardioBand electrocardiogram device for the Apple Watch, designed to monitor for early signs of atrial fibrillation.
First introduced in March 2016, KardiaBand is the first medical device accessory to be cleared by the federal safety watchdog for the Apple Watch, Mountain View, Calif.-based AliveCor said. It’s designed to display and record clinical-grade cardiac rhythm readings in real time in about 30 seconds, the company said.
AliveCor also said it launched the SmartRhythm artificial intelligence app for the Apple Watch, which is designed to continuously evaluate the ...

Plasma Metal Concentrations and Incident Coronary Heart Disease in Chinese Adults: The Dongfeng-Tongji Cohort
Conclusions:
Our study suggested that incident CHD was positively associated with plasma levels of titanium and arsenic, and inversely associated with selenium. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings in other populations. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1521

Godly gift for arthritis pain
Big Pharma is at it again… Creating and selling a drug that causes thousands of heart attacks and strokes each year.
In 2015, the FDA asked drug makers to strengthen their warning labels.
Since then, most have listed their dangerous side effects on the bottle.
But one manufacturer thought they didn’t have to warn people about their dangerous drug.
They marketed their product as a “unique” breakthrough. They even published studies promising it was “safe for long-term use.” 1
The drug is a 7-year-old arthritis drug called Actemra. It’s made by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche.

What Causes Microcephaly?
Discussion
Microcephaly is usually defined as an occipitofrontal head circumference (OFC) more than 2 standard deviations (SD) below the mean for sex, age and ethnicity. Severe microcephaly is used for OFC < 3 standard deviations. Rates of microcephaly range from 0.5-12 patients/10,000 live births.
The OFC should be measured at every well child visit and at other opportunities and plotted on standard growth charts. The OFC is measured using a nonelastic tape measure around the largest part of the head with the tape measure held above the eyebrows and ears. It is a highly reproducible measurement. There are several diff...

Association between Exposure to p,p ′-DDT and Its Metabolite p,p′-DDE with Obesity: Integrated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions:
We classified p,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDE as “presumed” to be obesogenic for humans, based on a moderate level of primary human evidence, a moderate level of primary in vivo evidence, and a moderate level of supporting evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP527

Endocrine Disruptors and Health Effects in Africa: A Call for Action
Conclusion:
To address the many challenges posed by EDCs, we argue that Africans should take the lead in prioritization and evaluation of environmental hazards, including EDCs. We recommend the institution of education and training programs for chemical users, adoption of the precautionary principle, establishment of biomonitoring programs, and funding of community-based epidemiology and wildlife research programs led and funded by African institutes and private companies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1774

Curative treatment of hypertension by physical exercise.
Authors: Lou M, Zong XF, Wang LL
Abstract
Hypertension, one of the most common chronic and sporadic conditions, figures among the important worldwide public-health challenges, and it is a major risk for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and other complications, including dementia. Hypertension is neglected by individuals, and the prevalence of this condition continues to rise across the world. A great number of patients receiving medical intervention is not successfully treated, while adequate curative health services are dependent on the exact update data of the countrywide prevalence of known and undetected c...
