Myocardial Infarction, Stroke, and All-Cause Mortality According to Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Level in the Elderly, a Nationwide Study
CONCLUSION: Among the elderly, lower LDL-C was associated with decreased risks of MI and stroke. Lower LDL-C achieved by statins in the elderly was associated with a decreased risk of all-cause death during follow-up, suggesting that LDL-C paradox for the premature death risk in the elderly should not be applied to statin users. Intensive statin therapy should not be hesitated for older adults with cardiovascular risk factors including diabetes.PMID:35255552 | DOI:10.4093/dmj.2021.0225

Risk of stroke following antivenom use after venomous snakebite: correspondence
We read with great interest the epidemiological study by Hunget al.1 on the risk of stroke with antivenom use after venomous snakebite in Taiwan. According to the national medical claims data, the authors provide us with useful information and disclose that venomous snakebite is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke after the use of antivenom after using the matching propensity score in relevant measurable covariates. We strongly agree with the comments by Yehet al.2 on the unmeasured confounders associated with stroke in the present study. Furthermore, we are concerned that other residual confounders rel...

Increased risk of ischemic stroke in cervical cancer patients: a nationwide population-based study
Background: Increased risk of ischemic stroke has been validated for several cancers, but limited study evaluated this risk in cervical cancer patients. Our study aimed to evaluate the risk of ischemic stroke in cervical cancer patients. Methods: The study analyzed data from the 2003 to 2008 National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) provided by the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan. Totally, 893 cervical cancer patients after radiotherapy and 1786 appendectomy patients were eligible. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox proportional hazards model were used to assess the risk of ischemic stroke. Results...

Stroke after burn: Population data analysis
This study uses data obtained from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 (LHID2005). The study cohort consisted of all patients who had diagnoses of burn recorded in the database (ICD-9-CM codes 948) between January 1 2004 and December 31 2008 (N=1549).Main findings: The patients with burn and the comparison cohort are 7410 patients, 146 experienced stroke during the follow-up period of up to 5 years. In average, the burn patients suffered from stroke by 1.48 years after burn. The hazard ratio of stroke was 1.74 (95% CI, 1.15–2.63) for patients with TBSA burn

Long-Term Effect of Fee-For-Service-Based Reimbursement Cuts on Processes and Outcomes of Care for Stroke: Interrupted Time-Series Study From Taiwan Original Articles
Conclusions— There are improvement trends in processes and outcomes of care over time. However, the reimbursement cuts from the FFS-based global budget cap are associated with trend changes in processes and outcomes of care for stroke. The FFS-based reimbursement cuts may have long-term positive and negative associations with stroke care.
