Race/Ethnicity Considerations in the Prevention and Treatment of Stroke
AbstractPurpose of reviewTo describe racial and ethnic considerations that exist for the prevention and treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.Recent findingsMultiple studies have characterized stroke disparities. The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Study (GCNKSS) found that Black individuals have nearly twice the rates of stroke compared to White individuals. Differences in the incidence of stroke risk factors, both inherited and acquired, contribute to these disparities. Black individuals have an earlier age of onset, a longer duration, and greater severity of hypertension compared to White individuals....

Effects of Radial Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy on Flexor Spasticity of the Upper Limb in Post-stroke Patients: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial
Discussion: This trial aims to analyze the application of rESWT for the management of spasticity after stroke via appropriate assessments. We hypothesized that after receiving active rESWT, patients would show greater improvement of upper limb muscles compared with patients within the sham-placebo group. The rESWT would be an alternative to traditional methods, and the results of this study may provide support for the further study of potential mechanisms.Clinical Trial Registration:www.chictr.org.cn, identifier: ChiCTR1800016144.

The Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Protocol in Acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Seen within 24 Hours at a Tertiary Institution
We read with interest the research article entitled “Acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion Seen within 24 h at a Tertiary Institution”,1 it was an original study focusing on the timing of emergency hospital attendance after acute Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO) onset from sudden vision loss. The authors were particularly concerned on th e CRAO protocol of intravenous thrombolysis and diagnostic pathway. However, as the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) practitioners running the HORA study,2–5 we are more interested in the HBOT protocol adopted in the authors’ tertiary institution, which was not mentioned in the article.

Cerebral venous thrombosis: a retrospective unicentric analysis of clinical and neuroimaging characteristics
AbstractThrombosis of dural sinuses and/or cerebral veins (CVT) is an uncommon form of stroke, usually affecting young individuals. It has a variable clinical presentation ranging from mild cases presenting only headaches, to severe cases featuring encephalopathy, coma or status epilepticus. A retrospective cross-sectional study of patients treated in the outpatient department and in-hospital during the period from 2014 to 2020 at the Neurology Clinic —University Clinical Centre of Serbia was conducted. Forty-nine patients (24 men; 25 women) were included in the study. Twenty-three patients (46.9%) suffered a subacute fo...

Endovascular Treatment in Acute Ischemic Stroke Adoption and Practice: A Single-Center Indonesian Experience
Indonesia is facing increasing stroke prevalence in the past 5 years. Ischemic stroke imposes economic and productivity burden if it is not addressed properly. Endovascular treatment studies are conducted in developed countries where facilities and cost do not count in therapy consideration if it is indicated. Developing countries like Indonesia should work hard to provide the best hyperacute stroke care with protocol deviation and limitation. This is the first review on endovascular treatment practice in a top single-center hospital in Indonesia. Further improvement is needed to catch up with state-of-the-art hyperacute i...

The Predictive Role of a Novel Risk Index in Patients Undergoing Carotid Artery Stenting: Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index
Inflammatory mechanisms play an important role in both atherosclerosis and stroke. There are several inflammatory peripheral blood count markers associated with carotid artery stenosis degree, symptomatic carotid artery lesions and carotid artery stent restenosis that reported in previous studies. However, the prognostic role of the blood cell counts and their ratios in predicting in-hospital and long-term outcomes in patients undergoing carotid artery stenting (CAS) has not been comprehensively investigated.

Streamlining the Path to Endovascular Reperfusion
In this issue of JAMA Neurology, Sarraj et al report on the associations of repeated imaging on arrival at an endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) –capable hospital with clinical outcomes after EVT. They studied an observational cohort of 2533 patients who had ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion within 24 hours of stroke onset. It is well understood that a favorable outcome depends on the time from stroke onset to reperfusion, and th ere is no doubt that proceeding directly to the angiography suite (DTA) saves time compared with repeating imaging (median time, 26 minutes shorter in Sarraj et al). Direct transfer to th...
