Therapeutic targeting of the complement system in ocular disease
Drug Discov Today. 2023 Aug 30:103757. doi: 10.1016/j.drudis.2023.103757. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe complement system is involved in the pathogenesis of several ocular diseases, providing a rationale for the investigation of complement-targeting therapeutics for these conditions. Dry age-related macular degeneration, as characterised by geographic atrophy (GA), is currently the most active area of research for complement-targeting therapeutics, with a complement C3 inhibitor approved in the United States earlier this year marking the first approved therapy for GA. This review discusses the role of complement in ocu...

Canada's National Advisory Committee on immunization: Adaptations and challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic
Vaccine. 2023 Aug 30:S0264-410X(23)00991-X. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic has challenged traditional vaccine guidance infrastructure and frameworks, and added urgency and complexity to the operation of National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs). Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) provides immunization guidance to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) who publicly shares expert and evidence-informed guidance with Canadian provinces and territories. Throughout the pandemic, NACI and PHAC implemented many adaptations to meet u...

An online therapist-guided ultra-brief treatment for depression and anxiety: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: The online ultra-brief treatment resulted in significant reductions in depression and anxiety that were non-inferior to a longer treatment course after 9-weeks. Remotely delivered ultra-brief treatments have the potential to provide accessible and effective care for those who cannot, or would prefer not to, access longer psychological interventions.PMID:37655527 | DOI:10.1017/S003329172300260X

Need for implementation of safe medication practice to avoid medication errors - A journey through case series
J Family Med Prim Care. 2023 Jul;12(7):1464-1467. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2016_22. Epub 2023 Jul 14.ABSTRACTPatient safety is seriously threatened by medication errors. Pharmacological therapy aims to accomplish particular therapeutic objectives that improve patient quality of life while reducing patient risk. To develop a clear plan for minimizing medication errors and establishing safe and effective medication practices, the study's major goal is to identify the key locations at which medication errors usually occur. The five scenarios presented here demonstrate the frequent errors that took place, including communicati...

T cell control of SARS-CoV-2: When, which, and where?
Semin Immunol. 2023 Aug 29;70:101828. doi: 10.1016/j.smim.2023.101828. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEfficient immune protection against viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 requires the coordinated activity of innate immunity, B and T cells. Accumulating data point to a critical role for T cells not only in the clearance of established infection, but also for aborting viral replication independently of humoral immunity. Here we review the evidence supporting the contribution of antiviral T cells and consider which of their qualitative features favour efficient control of infection. We highlight how studies of SARS-CoV-2 and other c...

Lessons Learned From Contact Tracing During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Public Health Students' Experiences in the Field
This study employed a qualitative thematic approach to capture 11 graduate-level public health students' experiences, motivations, challenges, and recommendations on contact tracing procedures as DOH contract tracers. In-depth interview questions focused on students' interest in public health, experiences as a contact tracer, patient/case interactions, and personal outlook on the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic brought new experiences and challenges for public health students employed by local health departments as contact tracers. Three categories and subthemes emerged from interviews: (1) motivations to work as ...

Conservation genetics of endangered Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don - a pharmaceutically prized medicinal plant from the Himalaya and implications for species recovery
Gene. 2023 Aug 29:147748. doi: 10.1016/j.gene.2023.147748. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the genetic diversity and population structure of pharmaceutically important endangered plant species is crucial for their conservation and sustainable use. Despite the continuous population decline in Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don, a highly prized medicinal plant endemic to the Himalaya, information regarding its conservation genetics has been lacking. Here, we employed a conservation genetics approach to investigate how drastically declining populations in natural habitats impact population genetic diversity and s...

Lessons learned from the successful polio vaccine experience not learned or applied with the development and implementation of the COVID-19 vaccines
Curr Opin Immunol. 2023 Aug 29;84:102386. doi: 10.1016/j.coi.2023.102386. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe eradication of polio during the latter half of the 20th century can be considered one of the greatest medical triumphs in history. This achievement can be attributed to the development of vaccines that received the public's almost unwavering acceptance of them, especially by parents who had been waiting/hoping for a medical breakthrough that would ensure that their children would not succumb to the devastating effects of infantile paralysis. Sixty years later, the worldwide population was now confronted with an equal...
