Effect of medical staff training on vaccination coverage in outpatients with cancer: An interventional multicenter before-and-after study
CONCLUSION: As expected, VC was very low in patients with cancer, consistent with the literature. There was no impact of the intervention for pneumococcal and influenza VC.PMID:36654840 | PMC:PMC9841025 | DOI:10.1016/j.jvacx.2023.100261

The Virus Hunters Trying to Prevent the Next Pandemic
Nobody saw SARS-CoV-2 coming. In the early days of the pandemic, researchers were scrambling to collect samples from people who had mysteriously developed fevers, coughs, and breathing problems. Pretty soon, they realized that the disease-causing culprit was a new virus humans hadn’t seen before. And the world, lacking a coordinated global response, was unprepared. Some countries acted quickly to develop tests for the novel coronavirus, while others with fewer resources were left behind. With a virus oblivious to national borders, and with travel between countries and continents more common than it had been in previo...

Educational interventions for health professionals managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in primary care
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence of efficacy was equivocal for educational interventions for health professionals in primary care on the proportion of COPD diagnoses confirmed with spirometry, the proportion of patients with COPD who participate in pulmonary rehabilitation, and the proportion of patients prescribed guideline-recommended COPD respiratory medications. Educational interventions for health professionals may improve influenza vaccination rates among patients with COPD and patient satisfaction with care. The quality of evidence for most outcomes was low or very low due to heterogeneity and methodological limitations of...

Strategies to improve vaccination rates in people who are homeless: A systematic review
Vaccine. 2022 Apr 25:S0264-410X(22)00436-4. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.04.022. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPeople who are homeless experience higher rates of vaccine-preventable disease, including COVID-19, than the general population, and poorer associated health outcomes. However, delivering vaccinations to people who are homeless is complex, and there is a lack of evidence to inform practice in this area. The aim of this systematic review is to: (a) identify, (b) analyse the characteristics of, and (c) evaluate the outcomes of, strategies to improve vaccination rates in people who are homeless. Literature was retriev...

An Opportunity in Cancer Prevention: Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Delivery in the Hospital
CONCLUSIONS: Using QI methodology we were successful in increasing HPV and meningococcal vaccination rates among hospitalized adolescents. Considering the relationship of these 2 vaccines is a potential topic of future work. Discerning the correct immunization status at time of admission may be a potential opportunity for improvement in future work.PMID:35419598 | DOI:10.1542/hpeds.2021-006302

Vaccination in rheumatic disease patients: results of a pilot quality improvement program
CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of a pilot vaccination QI program led by rheumatology fellows-in-training showed promising preliminary benefits in the vaccination uptake among RD patients and helps to evaluate the barriers to surpass.PMID:35079179 | PMC:PMC8768043 | DOI:10.5114/reum.2021.112349

Mycobacterium porcinum Skin and Soft Tissue Infections After Vaccinations - Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, September 2018-February 2019
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2021 Oct 22;70(42):1472-1477. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7042a3.ABSTRACTDuring December 2018-February 2019, a multistate investigation identified 101 patients with vaccination-associated adverse events among an estimated 940 persons in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio who had received influenza; hepatitis A; pneumococcal; or tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccines at the workplace during September 11-November 28, 2018. These vaccines had been administered by staff members of a third-party health care company contracted by 24 businesses. Company A provided multiple ...

Downward Trend in Resident Myringotomy and Tympanostomy Tube Experience
CONCLUSIONS: Otologic surgeries are an important part of resident education and historically have served as one of the initial surgical training experiences for residents. There has been a significant reduction in the number of myringotomy and tympanostomy procedures performed by otolaryngology residents in the past decade. While multiple factors influence resident experience, it is possible that introduction of PCV13 has impacted resident exposure to myringotomy and tympanostomy tube placement. Resident proficiency with this procedure has likely not been affected by introduction of PCV13. Data should be reassessed in 5 ye...
