Optimizing total ammonia-nitrogen concentration for enhanced microbial fuel cell performance in landfill leachate treatment: a bibliometric analysis and future directions
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Jul 15. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-28580-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUntreated landfill leachate can harm the environment and human health due to its organic debris, heavy metals, and nitrogen molecules like ammonia. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have emerged as a promising technology for treating landfill leachate and generating energy. However, high concentrations of total ammonia-nitrogen (TAN), which includes both ammonia and the ammonium ion, can impede MFC performance. Therefore, maintaining an adequate TAN concentration is crucial, as both excess and insufficient levels can reduce po...

Inhibition of checkpoint kinase prevents human oocyte apoptosis induced by chemotherapy and allows enhanced tumour chemotherapeutic efficacy
Hum Reprod. 2023 Jul 14:dead145. doi: 10.1093/humrep/dead145. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSTUDY QUESTION: Could inhibition of the checkpoint kinase (CHEK) pathway protect human oocytes and even enhance the anti-tumour effects, during chemotherapy?SUMMARY ANSWER: CHEK inhibitors prevented apoptosis of human oocytes induced by chemotherapy and even enhanced the anti-tumour effects.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: CHEK inhibitors showed ovarian protective effects in mice during chemotherapy, while their role in human oocytes is unclear.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This experimental study evaluated the ovarian reserve of young patien...

ADHD, chronotype, and circadian preference in a multi-site sample of college students
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jul 12:e13994. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13994. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and an evening chronotype are both common among college students, and there is growing interest in understanding the possible link between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and circadian function. However, mixed findings have been reported, and many of the existing studies have used small samples that were unable to examine chronotype across attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder presentations. Participants were 4751 students (73% female; 80% White), aged 18-29 years (M = 19.28, SD = 1.50...

Abortion laws are driving academics out of some U.S. states —and keeping others from coming
After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in June 2022, Alesha Thayer sat down with her husband and worked out a plan to leave the state where she has been a faculty member for more than 5 years. Abortions had immediately become outlawed there, and Thayer, who has experienced miscarriages and complicated pregnancies and hopes to grow her family, feared the new legal landscape would limit her reproductive autonomy and the care she could receive. “We just can’t be here anymore,” the physical scientist says. (Thayer is not her real name; Science granted anonymity to multiple s...

'Growing your own' a case study of a collaborative training program in medical radiation science
CONCLUSIONS: Collaboration is beneficial in producing professionals in regions with smaller enrolments limit the ability to grow their own graduates independently. Interuniversity collaborative models are recommended for other rural regions to meet local health workforce needs.PMID:37431793 | DOI:10.1002/jmrs.704

Identification of a partnership model between a university, for-profit, and not-for-profit organization to address health professions education and health inequality gaps through simulation-based education: A scoping review protocol
CONCLUSION: This scoping review will provide an understanding on the extent of existing literature regarding the diffusion of simulators for healthcare provider training through a multi-institutional partnership. This scoping review will benefit R&R parts of Canada by identifying gaps in knowledge and determining a process to deliver simulators to train healthcare providers. Findings from this scoping review will be submitted for publication in a scientific journal.PMID:37428783 | PMC:PMC10332583 | DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0288374

Use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Lower Extremity Research
CONCLUSION: A discrepancy was found between the PROMs that were recommended by SRs and those used to assess clinical outcomes in published research. The results of this study will help to produce more uniformity with the use of PROMs that have the most appropriate psychometric properties when the reporting treatment outcomes for those with extremity pathologies.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 3a.PMID:37425104 | PMC:PMC10324296 | DOI:10.26603/001c.74698
