An Analysis of Infection Prevention and Control Practices in Designated Hospitals that Treat COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: Chinese prophylaxis and controlling measures for COVID-19 are mainly to protect vulnerable populations, cut off transmission routes, and control the source of infection. Therefore, we must also do our best to prevent and control novel coronavirus pneumonia to protect our health and reduce the burden on our country.PMID:37708537

Factors associated with academic performance in adolescents from La Rioja (Spain): lifestyle habits, health indicators, and sociodemographic factors
CONCLUSIONS: interventions aimed at combating academic failure should take into account the aforementioned associated factors, with special emphasis on the most vulnerable groups such as males, those with lower socioeconomic status, and those who follow unhealthy lifestyle habits.PMID:37705442 | DOI:10.20960/nh.04599

Reporting of Rehabilitation Outcomes in the Traumatic Lower Limb Amputation Literature: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: The study provides a list of outcome indicators explicitly published for adults with traumatic LLA, highlighting inconsistent reporting of outcome indicators. The lack of a standardized set of outcome measures is a barrier to performing meta-analyses on interventions, preventing the identification of effective care models and clinical pathways. Developing a core outcome set (COS) consisting of minimum outcome measures deemed necessary for clinical decision-making may address this issue.PMID:37708929 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.08.028

Supporting nonlinear careers to diversify science
by Anna L. Vlasits, Monique L. Smith, Maria Maldonado, Simone Brixius-Anderko Nonlinear careers through academia are increasingly common, but funding agencies and search committees penalize these paths. Why do scientists stray from the beaten path, how do they contribute to science, and how do we level the playing field? Those who follow non-linear career trajectories often face disadvantages in academia. This Perspective looks at why individuals might choose non-linear careers and how these benefit diversity in science.

Enhancing Healthcare Through Industry-Specific Large Language Models
The following is a guest article by Tisson Mathew, Founder and CEO at SkyPoint AI Why Large Language Models Trained on Industry Context are Essential for Effective Generative AI in the Healthcare Space Ask ChatGPT an important but complicated healthcare-related question, and you might very well get a wrong—and potentially dangerous—answer. Navigating the complexities of medical data, regulations, and patient care can place demands on generative AI technologies that can’t be fulfilled. But there is a way to take full advantage of the power of GenAI — with industry-specific LLMs that are securely supplied wit...

Problem exploration for creating value propositions when developing point-of-care solutions
Biosens Bioelectron. 2023 Aug 31;241:115636. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2023.115636. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoint-of-care (POC) testing has been increasingly proposed as one of the most promising solutions for improving healthcare provision as it enables fast and accurate testing both inside and outside hospital settings. Many of these POC device stem from academic research. Yet, the commercialization of these devices through academic spin-offs is not straigthforward. Many academic spin-offs fail due to an inproperly articulated value proposition. To create a value proposition with biosensors it is crucial to understand ho...

The novel prognostic nomograms for predicting cancer-specific survival and overall survival in mixed medullary and follicular cell carcinoma: A SEER-based study
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we concluded that there are large differences between MMFCC and MTC in terms of demographic information, clinicopathological characteristics, treatment information, and survival status information, and we constructed the novel prognostic nomograms for 3-, 5-, and 10 year CSS and OS for patients with MMFCC with risk stratification, which will help clinicians to develop individualized protocols for their postoperative treatments and follow-ups.PMID:37704803 | DOI:10.1007/s00432-023-05326-5

Epidemiology Of Postoperative Complications After Esophagectomy: Implications for Management
CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining a high index of suspicion for early postoperative complications is crucial for rescuing patients after esophagectomy. Early postoperative pneumonia and atrial fibrillation may be sentinel complications for an anastomotic leak, and their occurrence may be used to prompt further clinical investigation. Early recovery protocols should consider the development of early complications into postoperative feeding and imaging algorithms.PMID:37704003 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.09.004

Association of Coronary Artery Calcium Detected by Routine Ungated CT Imaging With Cardiovascular Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Incidental CAC ≥100 was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death and adverse cardiovascular outcomes, beyond traditional risk factors. DL-CAC from routine non-ECG-gated CTs identifies patients at increased cardiovascular risk and holds promise as a tool for opportunistic screening to facilitate earlier intervention.PMID:37704309 | DOI:10.1016/j.jacc.2023.06.040
