81 A Review of the Referrals to a Daily TIA Service and Subsequent Specialist Diagnosis
ConclusionEvidence shows that patients suffering TIA should be seen urgently within 24hrs. The degree of non TIA symptoms being reviewed risks these services being overrun.  A review of our service has shown that the average time of referral to review is longer than desired, however only a third of patients seen were felt to have a TIA. Unless there is a change in the standard of referral it will continue to be difficult to see all true TIAs within 24hrs. This will require further education for our colleagues and a more robust triaging system.

Resistance to developing brain pathology due to vascular risk factors: the role of educational attainment
We examined if education contributes to brain resistance by studying its influence on the association between vascular risk factors and brain pathology. In 4111 stroke-free and dementia-free community-dwelling participants (62.9 ± 10.7 years), we explored the association between vascular risk factors (hypertension and the Framingham Stroke Risk Profile [FRSP]) and imaging markers of brain pathology (markers of cerebral small vessel disease and brain volumetry), stratified by educational attainment level. Associations of hypertension and FSRP with markers of brain pathology were not significantly different between levels o...

Cardiometabolic and Vascular Disease Factors and Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia
Conclusion: Older adults with higher burden of CMVD, driven especially by diabetes, are likely to increase the risk of prevalent and incident MCI and dementia.Gerontology

Co-occurrence of cardiometabolic diseases and frailty in older Chinese adults in the Beijing Longitudinal Study of Ageing
Conclusion: cardiometabolic disorders do not occur in isolation and commonly increase not just together, but in the presence of other health deficits. Healthcare providers who work with older adults with such problems need to develop methods to adapt their treatments to the needs of frail older adults.

Optimal Blood Pressure for Cognitive Function: Findings from an Elderly African‐American Cohort Study
ConclusionHigh and low BP were associated with poorer cognitive performance. A joint optimal region of SBP and DBP for cognitive function has been identified, which may provide useful clinical information on optimal BP control in cognitive health and lead to better quality of life for elderly adults.

Tea Consumption and Depressive Symptoms in Older People in Rural China
ConclusionsDaily tea consumption is associated with a lower likelihood of depressive symptoms in Chinese older people living in a rural community. The association appears to be independent of cerebrovascular disease and atherosclerosis.

Biopsychosocial Risk Factors for Driving Cessation: Findings From the Health and Retirement Study
This study aims to identify social, psychological, and biomedical risk factors for current and future driving cessation in older adults. Method: Data from six waves (1998-2008) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were pooled. Participants aged 65 and above were included in the study (N = 17,349). Results: Multivariate logistic regression models to identify risk factors for current and future driving cessation were consistent (age, gender, education, race, marital status, income, cognitive function, limits in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living, vision, health, diabetes, stroke, arthr...

A right hemisphere role in cognitive reserve.
Abstract High levels of education, occupational complexity, and/or premorbid intelligence are associated with lower levels of cognitive impairment than would be expected from a given brain pathology. This has been observed across a range of conditions including Alzheimer's disease (Roe et al., 2010), stroke (Ojala-Oksala et al., 2012), traumatic brain injury (Kesler et al., 2003), and penetrating brain injury (Grafman, 1986). This cluster of factors, which seemingly protect the brain from expressing symptoms of damage, has been termed "cognitive reserve" (Stern, 2012). The current review considers one possible ...

C-reactive protein, APOE genotype and longitudinal cognitive change in an older population
Conclusions: this study strengthens previous cross-sectional findings and shows elevated levels of CRP to be linked to a decreased risk of longitudinal cognitive decline in the very old. However, as with prior analyses, this was only observed in those not carrying an APOE e4 allele. Future work on larger APOE e4 allele carrying samples is required to determine the nature of the association in this population.

Linking social capital and mortality in the elderly: A Swedish national cohort study.
CONCLUSION: There are associations between low linking social capital and mortality from chronic disorders and suicide in the elderly population. Community support for elderly people living in neighborhoods with low levels of linking social capital may need to be strengthened. PMID: 24632181 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors associated with functional incapacity in elders living in long stay institutions in Brazil: a cross-sectional study
This study aimed to assess functional capacity in institutionalized elders, as well as undertake an exploratory analysis of its associated factors. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with institutionalized Brazilian elders. Functional capacity was assessed using the Katz Index for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and the Lawton Scale for Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL). The characteristics of dependent individuals were described and logistic regression models were developed for both scales. Multiple models that included all selected variables were developed using a hierarchical approach. We considered ...

An Examination of Family Caregiver Experiences during Care Transitions of Older Adults.
This study explored informal family caregiver experiences in supporting care transitions between hospital and home for medically complex older adults. Using a qualitative, grounded-theory approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with community and resource case managers, as well as with informal caregivers of older hip-fracture and stroke patients, and of those recovering from hip replacement surgery. Six properties characterizing caregiver needs in successfully transitioning care between hospital and home were integrated into a theory addressing both a transitional care timeline and the emotional journ...

Disassociation of verbal learning and hippocampal volume in type 2 diabetes and major depression
ConclusionsThe relationship between hippocampal volume and performance on the California Verbal Learning Test is decoupled in subjects with type 2 diabetes and major depression and this decoupling may contribute to poor verbal learning and memory performance in this study population.
