Abstract 037: The Accuracy of Self-reported Blood Pressure in the Medication Adherence Improvement Support App for Engagement - Blood Pressure (MedISAFE-BP) Trial Session Title: Poster Session I
Discussion: In this cohort of individuals who reported that their BP was poorly controlled, only one-third actually had elevated BP when measured with a home BP cuff. While this discrepancy may have many underlying causes, it suggests that the use of self-reported BPs is not an accurate method of monitoring hypertension control at the population-level. Reassuringly, several factors are independently associated with accurate self-reported BPs, and thus there may be some subgroups for whom self-report can be relied upon.

Abstract 043: Health Insurance and the Risk of Incident Cardiovascular Disease in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Session Title: Poster Session I
Conclusions: The association of health insurance with CVD incidence varied by insurance group, and private insurance was associated with a lower risk of incident CVD. Further exploration of the features of health insurance coverage that impact CVD incidence may facilitate improvements in the primary prevention of CVD.

Cardiovascular health knowledge of Polish population. Comparison of two National Multicenter Health Surveys WOBASZ and WOBASZ II.
CONCLUSIONS: Since 2003 Polish adults significantly advanced their knowledge and awareness of cardiovascular risk factors. Gender, age, education level, coronary artery disease history and family history of cardiovascular disease death occurred to be the significant determinants of cardiovascular health knowledge. From twenty to thirty percent of studied persons, who declared their awareness, finally occurred to be unaware of own CVD risk factors. PMID: 28394004 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Compensatory functional reorganization may precede hypertension-related brain damage and cognitive decline: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study
This article reports the results of functional MRI during a Stroop color interference task and structural evaluations based on a modified Fazekas scale. Results: No intergroup differences were found in regards to the severity of white matter lesions (Mann–Whitney U test = 150.5, P > 0.1), nor from the task performance in the scanner (t(35) = 0.2, P > 0.1). However, brain activation patterns between patients and controls varied. Hypertensive patients involved significantly more cerebral areas during the processing, regardless of the task difficulty. Differences were found in 26 diverse regions of both pri...

Longitudinal Study of Hypertensive Subjects With Type 2 Diabetes MellitusNovelty and Significance Epidemiology/Population
Despite adequate glycemic and blood pressure control, treated type 2 diabetic hypertensive subjects have a significantly elevated overall/cardiovascular risk. We studied 244 816 normotensive and 99 720 hypertensive subjects (including 7480 type 2 diabetics) attending medical checkups between 1992 and 2011. We sought to identify significant differences in overall/cardiovascular risk between hypertension with and without diabetes mellitus. Mean follow-up was 12.7 years; 14 050 all-cause deaths were reported. From normotensive to hypertensive populations, a significant progression in overall/cardiovascular mortality was...

Systolic Blood Pressure and Vascular Disease in Men Aged 65 Years and OverNovelty and Significance Epidemiology/Population
There is uncertainty about the relation between blood pressure and vascular disease at older age. We assessed the association of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and major vascular events in a prospective cohort study of 7564 men aged 65 to 94 years, recruited in 1996–1999 from the general population in Perth, Western Australia. SBP was measured at baseline and again at resurvey in 2001–2004. Participants were monitored for fatal and nonfatal vascular events. To limit the effect of reverse causality, analyses were restricted to men without previous vascular disease at baseline. Hazard ratios were estimated by Cox regressi...

Use of Evidence-Based Therapy for Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Canadian Outpatients with Atrial Fibrillation
Using data collected from 2 national atrial fibrillation (AF) primary care physician chart audits (Facilitating REview and EDucation to OptiMize stroke prevention in Atrial Fibrillation [FREEDOM AF] and CO-ordinated National Network to Engage physicians in the Care and Treatment of patients with Atrial Fibrillation [CONNECT AF]), we evaluated the frequency of, and factors associated with, the use of cardiovascular (CV) evidence-based therapies in Canadian AF outpatients with at least one CV risk factor or comorbidity.
