Mycoplasma Hominis: A Rare Case of Acute Otitis Media and Facial Nerve Paralysis
We report a case of AOM secondary to M. hominis, complicated by facial paralysis in an immunosuppressed patient. A 24-year-old male with multiple sclerosis, on rituximab, presented to the emergency department with otalgia and facial paralysis. He was diagnosed with Bell's palsy and subsequently referred to the otolaryngology service. Examination revealed right facial paralysis and purulent otorrhea. Computed tomography (CT) of the temporal bone showed right tympanic and mastoid opacification. The patient was admitted and started on IV ampicillin/sulbactam, IV dexamethasone, and ciprofloxacin/dexamethasone otic drops. Debri...

Adjunctive steroid therapy versus antibiotics alone for acute endophthalmitis after intraocular procedure
CONCLUSIONS: The currently available evidence on the effectiveness of adjunctive steroid therapy versus antibiotics alone in the management of acute endophthalmitis after intraocular surgery is inadequate. We found no studies that had enrolled cases of acute endophthalmitis following intravitreous injection. A combined analysis of two studies suggests that use of adjunctive steroids may provide a higher chance of having a good visual outcome at three months than not using adjunctive steroids. However, considering that most of the confidence intervals crossed the null, and that this review was limited in scope and applicabi...

Diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of otomastoiditis induced by Fusobacterium necrophorum: A retrospective multicentre cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Patients and/or their parents need to be informed about this potential unfortunate prognosis when otomastoiditis caused by F. necrophorum is diagnosed. To improve early diagnosis, otomastoiditis caused by F. necrophorum should be suspected and therefore immediately cultured when a) young children present with otomastoiditis, with b) high CRP values, and/or c) vomiting and decreased consciousness.PMID:35595214 | DOI:10.1016/j.anaerobe.2022.102587

In vitro Antimicrobial Activity of Robenidine, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid and Polymyxin B Nonapeptide Against Important Human and Veterinary Pathogens
Conclusion The results of our study demonstrate that robenidine is not suitable as a sole antimicrobial agent for the treatment of Gram-negative pathogen infections due to the lack of activity against the majority of Gram-negative isolates except for A. baumannii and A. calcoaceticus. However, we demonstrated in vitro efficacy against all selected Gram-negative organisms when robenidine was tested in combination with EDTA or PMBN, including against multidrug-resistant strains. Therefore, robenidine may be an appropriate candidate as a component of a combination preparation for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs. This...

Corticosteroids for septic arthritis in children.
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence for corticosteroids as adjunctive therapy in children with a diagnosis of septic arthritis is of low quality and is derived from the findings of two trials (N = 149). Corticosteroids may increase the proportion of patients without pain and the proportion of patients with normal function of the affected joint at 12 months, and may also reduce the number of days of antibiotic treatment. However, we cannot draw strong conclusions based upon these trial results. Additional randomised clinical trials in children with relevant outcomes are needed.
