Systematic review and meta-analysis of interleulin-6 inhibitors in reducing mortality for hospitalized patients with COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: A benefit in mortality for interleukine-6 inhibitors was found, but with important differences among the scenarios analyzed in the clinical trials. Positive results are mainly caused by two randomized clinical trials which are similar in concomitant use of steroids and veryhigh mortality in critical patents. Sarilumab was poorly represented in the meta-analysis. Nevertheless, an association between the benefit and the critical/non-critical condition was not found. More randomized clinical trials, mainly focused in atients at high mortality risk, are needed to confirm the benefit of interleukine- 6 inhibitors f...

Keratin films for ocular surface reconstruction: Wound healing in an in-vivo model
This study, further explored the biocompatibility of Keratin Film (KF) and its ability to sustain corneal epithelial wound healing. In three equal groups of 5 New Zeeland white rabbits a 4 mm superficial keratectomy was created in the right eye. Five eyes received a KF, five a human AM graft and the remaining five no implant. All eyes were treated with ofloxacin and dexamethasone eye drops and followed up for 10 days. Corneal fluorescein staining, vascularization, and transparency were assessed using slit lamp biomicroscopy according to a standardized grading score during and at the end of follow-up. The corneal-scleral-bu...

Glucocorticoids for croup in children
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence that glucocorticoids reduce symptoms of croup at two hours, shorten hospital stays, and reduce the rate of return visits or (re)admissions has not changed in this update. A smaller dose of 0.15 mg/kg of dexamethasone may be as effective as the standard dose of 0.60 mg/kg. More RCTs are needed to strengthen the evidence for effectiveness of low-dose dexamethasone at 0.15 mg/kg to treat croup.PMID:36626194 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001955.pub5

Isolated relapse of plasma cell leukemia in the central nervous systems: a case report and literature review
Int J Hematol. 2023 Feb 3. doi: 10.1007/s12185-023-03545-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPlasma cell leukemia is a rare yet aggressive form of multiple myeloma characterized by high levels of plasma cells circulating in the peripheral blood. We recently experienced a case of plasma cell leukemia that had been in stringent complete remission for nine years after autologous stem cell transplantations with subsequent courses of lenalidomide maintenance therapy, and then relapsed as an extramedullary plasmacytoma in the central nervous system. Assessment of the bone marrow did not prove proliferation of plasma cells at relaps...

Efficacy of Preemptive Dexamethasone versus Methylprednisolone in the Management of Postoperative Discomfort and Pain after Mandibular Third Molar Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
ScientificWorldJournal. 2023 Apr 30;2023:7412026. doi: 10.1155/2023/7412026. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTThe corticosteroids have been used for preemptive management of surgical sequelae after mandibular third molar extraction. The aim of this article was to review the efficacy of methylprednisolone versus dexamethasone in the management of postsurgical pain, swelling, and trismus after mandibular third molar surgery. Randomized, double-blinded studies from PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, DOSS, Cochrane central, and Web of Science were identified by using a search strategy. Randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of use ...
