The characterisation of antimicrobial resistant < em > Escherichia coli < /em > from dairy calves
Conclusion. Our study identified a high incidence of tetracycline and streptomycin-resistant E. coli in dairy calves, and highlighted the presence of multidrug-resistant strains, emphasising the need for further investigation into potential associations with farm management practices.PMID:37578342 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001742

Correlation between Bacterial Cell Density and Abundance of Antibiotic Resistance on Milking Machine Surfaces Assessed by Cultivation and Direct qPCR Methods
Microb Ecol. 2023 May 11. doi: 10.1007/s00248-023-02225-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe relative abundance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistance genes was surveyed for different parts of a milking machine. A cultivation approach based on swab samples showed a highly diverse microbiota, harboring resistances against cloxacillin, ampicillin, penicillin, and tetracycline. This approach demonstrated a substantial cloxacillin resistance of numerous taxa within milking machine microbiota coming along with regular use of cloxacillin for dry-off therapy of dairy cows. For the less abundant tetracycline-re...

Evaluation of Virulence, Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Forming Potential of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Isolates from Bovine Suspected with Mastitis
Curr Microbiol. 2023 Apr 29;80(6):198. doi: 10.1007/s00284-023-03303-2.ABSTRACTMethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogen that poses a significant threat in cases of chronic mastitis in dairy animals. The ability of MRSA to persist in the host is attributed to various virulence factors, genes encoding surface adhesins, and determinants of antibiotic resistance, which provide it a survival advantage. This investigation focused to determine the virulence factors, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profile and biofilm production potential of 46 MRSA isolates from 300 bovine mastitis milk samples. The AMR pro...

Lab-made 3D-printed electrochemical sensors for tetracycline determination
Talanta. 2023 Apr 11;259:124536. doi: 10.1016/j.talanta.2023.124536. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntibiotics such as tetracycline (TC) are widely prescribed to treat humans or dairy animals. Therefore, it is important to establish affordable devices in laboratories with minimal infrastructure. 3D printing has proven to be a powerful and cost-effective tool that revolutionizes many applications in electrochemical sensing. In this work, we employ a conductive filament based on graphite (Gr) and polylactic acid (PLA) (40:60; w/w; synthesized in our lab) to manufacture 3D-printed electrodes. This electrode was used "as print...

Biofilm expression and antimicrobial resistance patterns of < em > Streptococcus uberis < /em > isolated from milk samples of dairy cows in South Africa
J Dairy Res. 2023 Mar 8:1-5. doi: 10.1017/S0022029923000158. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe research described in this Research Communication addresses the hypothesis that intramammary infections with Streptococcus uberis (S. uberis) are associated with biofilm formation, which limits antibiotic efficacy. This retrospective study investigated biofilm expression and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns of 172 S. uberis infections. Isolates were recovered from milk samples of subclinical, clinical, and intramammary infection cases on 30 commercial dairy herds. We determined the presence and intensity of biofilm express...

Dissemination and characteristics of high-level erythromycin-resistant < em > Enterococcus faecalis < /em > from bulk tank milk of dairy companies in Korea
Can J Vet Res. 2023 Jan;87(1):51-58.ABSTRACTEnterococci are environmental pathogens that can cause bovine mastitis, which is treated with macrolides, one of which is erythromycin (ERY). The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of high-level erythromycin-resistant (HLER) Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) isolates from bulk tank milk of 4 dairy companies, identified as A to D, in order to assess the threat to public health. Although isolates from company D showed the highest prevalence of E. faecalis, the prevalence of HLER E. faecalis in isolates from company A showed a significant difference. A total of 1...

Antibiotic susceptibility and biofilm-forming ability of Veillonella strains
CONCLUSION: In this study, V. rogosae, V. nakazawae, V. parvula and V. ratti were isolated and identified. The four strains of Veillonella showed differences in MIC values for different antibiotics and biofilm-forming ability.PMID:36288773 | DOI:10.1016/j.anaerobe.2022.102667
