Association between non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drug use and brain tumour risk: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsNSAID (aspirin and non‐aspirin NSAID) use does not appear to be associated with brain tumour, but larger studies are needed to substantiate this relationship.

Do You Believe More Vaccines or Better Nutrition Prevents Disease?
Conclusion Tremendous government financial and medical resources are wasted on the development of more vaccinations to prevent diseases. No research has proven the effectiveness of vaccinations in preventing illness. Overwhelming evidence exists to show vaccines are dangerous to health and contribute to illness, injury and death. To prevent disease, one should avoid vaccinations, mercury dental fillings and toxic food. Following a nutrient-dense diet of whole, organic foods and removing toxic metals from the body are the best avenues to try and prevent illness and enhance health. References http://www.fierce...

Porcine carotid artery replacement with biodegradable electrospun poly-e-caprolactone vascular prosthesis
Conclusions: Biodegradable, electrospun PCL grafts showed good surgical and mechanical properties, no aneurysm formation, and similar short-term patency compared with ePTFE grafts. Rapid endothelialization and cell ingrowth confirms favorable PCL graft-recipient biological interaction. Despite good early results, long-term follow-up is required before clinical application.Clinical Relevance: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene vascular grafts provide excellent mechanical and handling properties. However, their late postimplant performance is poor due to nonhomogeneous endothelialisation, intimal hyperplasia - substrates of th...

Should patients taking aspirin for secondary prevention continue or discontinue the medication prior to elective, abdominal surgery? Best evidence topic (BET)
Abstract: This best evidence topic was investigated according to a described protocol. The question asked was: should patients on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) for secondary prevention stop or continue the medication prior to elective, abdominal surgery. Using the reported search 826 papers were found of which five represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The strongest evidence was from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) specifically looking at elective abdominal surgery, which showed no statistically significant difference between ASA continuation and discontinuation in terms of haemorrhagic or thrombo...

Review article: the pathogenesis and management of acute colonic diverticulitis
ConclusionsFurther high‐quality randomised controlled trials are required of both medical and surgical treatments in patients with acute diverticulitis, if management is to be evidence‐based.

The Cytokine Model of Schizophrenia: Emerging Therapeutic Strategies
We discuss the rationale for a trial of a novel biological immunotherapy in schizophrenia (SCZ). Available antipsychotic treatments for SCZ are often limited by partial effectiveness and significant side effects. The search for novel medications is of high priority. All current antipsychotics function primarily by blocking D2-type dopamine receptors. An emerging theory of SCZ postulates disturbances of cytokines and inflammatory mediators (i.e., the cytokine model), possibly originating in part from infectious exposures. Cytokines are one of the most important components of the immune system that orchestrate the response t...

The non‐linear threshold association between aspirin use and esophageal adenocarcinoma: results of a dose–response meta‐analysis
ConclusionOur findings suggest that there may be non‐linear threshold relations of frequency and duration of aspirin use with the risk of EAC. Further data from randomized clinical trials are required. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Aspirin use and early age-related macular degeneration: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: There is a small but statistically significant association between Aspirin use and early ARMD, which may warrant further investigation. PMID: 24513354 [PubMed - in process]

Desmopressin for reducing postoperative blood loss and transfusion requirements following cardiac surgery in adults
A best evidence topic in cardiac surgery was written according to a structured protocol. The question addressed was, in adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery requiring extracorporeal cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), does administration of desmopressin acetate (DDAVP) reduce postoperative blood loss and transfusion requirements? Altogether 38 papers were found using the reported search, of which 19 represented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The authors, journal, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes and results of these papers are tabulated. Perioperative ...

Review of guidelines on primary prevention of cardiovascular disease with aspirin: how much evidence is needed to turn a tanker?
Conclusion We found conflicting recommendations in various guidelines about the use of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular events, which reflect differences in selection of the evidence and in the timing of publication. According to recent evidence, in general, the use of aspirin seems no longer justifiable in primary prevention in patients with or without diabetes.

Platelet‐reactivity tests identify patients at risk of secondary cardiovascular events: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsPatients with HPR are suboptimal protected against future cardiovascular complications. Furthermore, not all of the numerous platelet tests prove to be able to identify patients at increased cardiovascular risk. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

CMS Adds Quality Measures to Physician Compare Website for Some Group Practices and ACO’s
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that for the first time, quality measures have been added to Physician Compare, a website that helps consumers search for information about hundreds of thousands of physicians and other health care professionals. "Patients and their families need facts to help them in making important decisions about health care, and choosing the right physician is one of the most important decisions they face," said CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner. In the first year, 66 group practices and 141 Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) now have quality data publicly reporte...

What is Life Coaching?
If you were to stop 100 people in the street and ask them what life is, you would probably get some strange looks, but I would imagine everybody would be able to give you an answer of some description. If you had too much time on your hands and you were to follow that up by asking them if they knew what a coach was, again most would be able to give you a satisfactory answer. So why do you think it is, that if you stopped 100 people and asked them to explain what Life Coaching is you would get more blank stares than if you asked the way to the gym at a Star Trek convention? You cannot get too many more obvious words than, ...

The Association Between Central Fat Distribution and Recurrent Cardiovascular Disease Events in Female Survivors of Nonfatal Myocardial Infarction.
CONCLUSIONS:: These results suggest that central fat distribution is positively associated with a recurrence of cardiovascular events after incident MI in women. The absence of decreased risk with secondary prevention interventions suggests that more investigation into the association of central abdominal fat and secondary prevention management is warranted. Glycoprotein IIb-IIIa inhibitors for acute ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The available trial evidence showed that, for individuals with acute ischaemic stroke, GP IIb-IIIa inhibitors are associated with a significant risk of intracranial haemorrhage with no evidence of any reduction in death or disability in survivors. These data do not support their routine use in clinical practice. The conclusion is driven by trials of Abciximab, which contributed 89% of the total number of study participants considered.
