Opportunities for intervention: stroke treatments, disability and mortality in urban Tanzania
ConclusionsThe 90-day mortality of stroke presenting at MNH is 50%, much higher than in higher income settings. Although severe stroke presentations are a major factor, efforts to improve the quality of care and prevent complications of stroke are urgently needed. Acute stroke interventions with low number needed to treat represent challenging long-term goals.

International study suggests combination therapy may prevent stroke in certain people
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Results from an international clinical trial of more than 4880 participants, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that combining clopidogrel and aspirin following a small stroke or experiencing minor stroke symptoms decreases risk of a new stroke, heart attack or other ischemic event within 90 days. The combination therapy was also associated with an increase in major bleeding, although many of those episodes were non-fatal and did not occur in the brain.

Aspirin lowers risk of death for patients with diabetes, heart failure
(American College of Cardiology) For people living with both Type 2 diabetes and heart failure, taking an aspirin each day appears to lower the risk of dying or being hospitalized for heart failure, according to research being presented at the American College of Cardiology's 67th Annual Scientific Session. But the data also reveal aspirin use may increase the risk of nonfatal heart attack or stroke, a somewhat contradictory finding that surprised researchers.

Risk factors of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke among hospitalized patients in Bangladesh - A case control study
The risk factor profiles, management and outcome have significant difference between stroke subsets. Aim of this study was to investigate the risk for the two most common subtypes of stroke in Bangladeshi population. Seventy cases of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) and 105 cases of confirmed ischemic stroke (IS) were recruited from the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital (ShSMCH) and Dhaka Medical College Hospital between January-June 2011. Total 171 age, sex matched controls were selected from the hospitalized patients with history of no stroke ever. Average hemorrhagic stroke patients (60.4 ±12.3 years) were younger tha...

Use of aspirin and statins for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection
This retrospective, cross-sectional study evaluated whether HIV-infected patients received aspirin and statins for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke. Among the 258 patients included, 50.4% (n = 130/258) of the patients had a high risk of myocardial infarction and 14% (n = 36/258) of stroke. Overall, 43.1% (n = 56/130) and 50% (n = 18/36) of the patients were prescribed aspirin for the primary prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke, respectively. Among the patients who required statin therapy, 42.5% (n = 34/80) and 37.1% (n = 13/35) of patients received it for the primary prevention of myoca...

Cost-Effectiveness of A Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device In Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation Unable or Unwilling to Tolerate Oral Anticoagulant Therapy In Italy And Spain
Approximately 18-20% of non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients are unable or unwilling to tolerate oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT), leaving them at risk of stroke. Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) device offers an alternative stroke risk reduction strategy that enables the majority of patients to discontinue long-term systematic OAT. Acknowledging both potential improvements in health outcomes and additional upfront implantation costs of a LAAC device, this study considers the lifetime costs and benefits of LAAC compared to aspirin plus clopidogrel (A+C) in high-risk NVAF patients ineligible or unwilling to ...
