Structure-function of DHEA binding proteins
Vitam Horm. 2023;123:587-617. doi: 10.1016/bs.vh.2022.12.002. Epub 2022 Dec 16.ABSTRACTDehydroepiandrosterone (3β-hydroxy-5-androsten-17-one, DHEA) and its sulfated metabolite DHEA-S are the most abundant circulating steroids and are precursors for active sex steroid hormones, estradiol and testosterone. DHEA has a broad range of reported effects in the central nervous system (CNS), cardiovascular system, adipose tissue, kidney, liver, and in the reproductive system. The mechanisms by which DHEA and DHEA-S initiate their biological effects are diverse. DHEA and DHEA-S may directly bind to plasma membrane (PM) receptors, i...

Effect of chemotherapy and different chemotherapy regimens on bone health among Chinese breast cancer women in different menstrual status: a self-control study
CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy might induce lumbar vertebrae BMD loss and spine osteoporosis with regimen differences among Chinese BC patients. Calcium/VitD supplementation could improve bone turnover markers, bone metabolism indicators, and bone mineral density. Early interventions on bone health are needed for BC patients during chemotherapy.PMID:37642751 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-023-07960-8

Fight Aging! Newsletter, August 7th 2023
In conclusion, here, we demonstrate a novel mechanism for ESC-EVs to protect cells from senescence. However, whether ESC-EVs rejuvenate aged mice via miR-15b-5p and miR-290a-5p remains unknown. Next, we plan to use miR-15b-5p and miR-290a-5p antagonists while treating aged mice with ESC-EVs to further investigate the mechanism by which ESC-EVs resist aging in vivo. « Back to Top Fatty Acid Metabolism as a Commonality in Different Approaches to Slowing Aging https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/08/fatty-acid-metabolism-as-a-commonality-in-different-approaches-to-slowing-aging/ It seems...

CETP expression ameliorates endothelial function in female mice through estrogen receptor- α and endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway
Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol. 2023 Aug 4. doi: 10.1152/ajpheart.00365.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndothelial dysfunction is an early manifestation of atherosclerosis. The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has been considered pro-atherogenic by reducing plasma HDL levels. However, CETP may exhibit cell- or tissue-specific effects. We have previously reported that male mice expressing the human CETP gene show impaired endothelium-mediated vascular relaxation associated with oxidative stress. Although sexual dimorphisms on the metabolic role of CETP has been proposed, possible sex differences in the vascul...

Hormonal and molecular characterization of calcium oxalate stone formers predicting occurrence and recurrence
Urolithiasis. 2023 Apr 24;51(1):76. doi: 10.1007/s00240-023-01440-8.ABSTRACTThe purpose of the study is to investigate the role of sex hormones, androgen receptors (ARs) and miRNA/CSF-1 in occurrence and recurrence of calcium oxalate (CaOx) renal urolithiasis. In this prospective study, 74 patients with CaOx stones; stone formers group (SFG) and 40 healthy subjects; control group were compared. SFG includes both de novo and recurrent cases. Steroid sex hormone plasma assay including testosterone, free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, estradiol, and sex hormone binding globulin was analyzed. ARs, miRNA-185-5p and CSF-1 ex...

Male Runners with Lower Energy Availability have Impaired Skeletal Integrity Compared to Non-athletes
CONCLUSIONS: Despite weight-bearing activity, skeletal integrity is impaired in male runners with lower caloric intake relative to exercise energy expenditure, which may increase bone stress injury risk. Lower estradiol and lean mass are associated with lower tibial strength in runners.PMID:37079740 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgad215
