Effects of growth hormone/estrogen/androgen on COVID-19-type proinflammatory responses in normal human lung epithelial BEAS-2B cells
CONCLUSION: GH/E2 alleviated inflammation in a COVID-19-type proinflammatory model, but Tes showed the opposite effect.PMID:36175845 | DOI:10.1186/s12860-022-00442-5

TMPRSS2 Expression and Activity Modulation by Sex-Related Hormones in Lung Calu-3 Cells: Impact on Gender-Specific SARS-CoV-2 Infection
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although males and females are at equivalent risk of infection, males are more prone to develop a higher severity disease, regardless of age. The factors that mediate susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 and transmission are still under investigation. A potential role has been attributed to differences in the immune systems response to viral antigens between males and females as well as to different regulatory actions played by sex-related hormones on the two crucial molecular effectors for SARS-CoV-2 infection, TMPRSS2 a...

The Multifaceted Biology of PCSK9
This article reviews the discovery of PCSK9, its structure-function characteristics, and its presently known and proposed novel biological functions. The major critical function of PCSK9 deduced from human and mouse studies, as well as cellular and structural analyses, is its role in increasing the levels of circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (LDLc), via its ability to enhance the sorting and escort of the cell surface LDL receptor (LDLR) to lysosomes. This implicates the binding of the catalytic domain of PCSK9 to the EGF-A domain of the LDLR. This also requires the presence of the C-terminal Cys/His-ri...

Estradiol reduces ACE2 and TMPRSS2 mRNA levels in A549 human lung epithelial cells
Drug Dev Res. 2022 Feb 1. doi: 10.1002/ddr.21923. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEpidemiologic studies suggest slightly higher risk of severe Covid-19 symptoms and fatalities following SARS-CoV-2 infection in men compared with women from similar age groups. This bias was suggested to reflect differences in the male and female immune system regulation, driven by different sex hormone levels in men and women, in particular, higher plasma estradiol in women. SARS-CoV-2 infects respiratory tract epithelial cells by binding to their cell membrane ACE2, followed by priming for cell entry by the host cell membrane serine protease ...

Differential Antibody Response to Inactivated COVID-19 Vaccines in Healthy Subjects
Front Cell Infect Microbiol. 2021 Dec 16;11:791660. doi: 10.3389/fcimb.2021.791660. eCollection 2021.ABSTRACTThe appearance and magnitude of the immune response and the related factors correlated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination need to be defined. Here, we enrolled a prospective cohort of 52 participants who received two doses of inactivated vaccines (BBIBP-CorV). Their serial plasma samples (n = 260) over 2 months were collected at five timepoints. We measured antibody responses (NAb, S-IgG and S-IgM) and routine blood parameter. NAb seroconversion occurred in 90.7% of vaccinated individuals and four typical NAb kinetic curve...

Low testosterone levels and high estradiol to testosterone ratio are associated with hyperinflammatory state and mortality in hospitalized men with COVID-19
CONCLUSIONS: Low total testosterone levels and elevated E2/T ratio values at admission are associated with hyperinflammatory state in hospitalized men with COVID-19. Low total testosterone levels at admission represent an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality in such patients. Therefore, total testosterone and E2/T ratio may serve as prognostic markers of disease severity in this population.PMID:34661247 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202110_26865
