Metformin and SGLT2i as First-line Combination Therapy in Type 2 Diabetes: A Real-world Study With a Focus on Ethnicity
Clin Ther. 2023 Aug 28:S0149-2918(23)00302-8. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2023.07.026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: Suboptimal glucose control early in the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is strongly associated with subsequent morbidity and mortality, termed the 'glycaemic legacy'. Additionally, it is known that Asian and Black individuals are at increased risk of T2D, and its associated complications compared to their White counterparts. However, ethnicity does not currently feature in the treatment algorithm of T2D, unlike in other cardiovascular disease states such as hypertension. We therefore sought to evalu...

Metformin has anti-inflammatory effects and induces immunometabolic reprogramming in hidradenitis suppurativa via multiple mechanisms
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides insight into the mechanisms of action of metformin in HS. The anti-inflammatory effects of metformin support its use as a therapeutic agent in HS, while its effects on immunometabolism suggest that targeting metabolism is a promising therapeutic option in inflammatory diseases, including HS.PMID:37648653 | DOI:10.1093/bjd/ljad305

Long and Short-term Metformin Consumption as a Potential Therapy to Prevent Complications of COVID-19
CONCLUSION: In this trial, metformin consumption had no effect on mortality and ICU admission rates in non-diabetic patients. However, metformin improved COVID-19 complications in diabetic patients who had been receiving metformin prior to COVID-19 infection, and it significantly lowered the intubation rates.PMID:37646067 | PMC:PMC10460805 | DOI:10.34172/apb.2023.066

A hospital-based assessment of glycemic control and medication adherence in type 2 diabetes mellitus in Eastern Nepal
CONCLUSION: The majority of the diabetic patients had good glycemic control and medium MA. Patients taking regular fruit, being involved in daily jogging, having a shorter duration of drug therapy, and having good diabetic knowledge were identified as factors that affect both glycemic control and MA.PMID:37636174 | PMC:PMC10451609 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_90_23

The correlation between vitamin B12 and folate levels and bone mineral density among the Saudi population in a primary care setting
CONCLUSION: Vitamin B12 is associated with fracture risk; however, vitamin B12 and folate levels are not correlated to BMD (femoral neck and lumbar spine).PMID:37636170 | PMC:PMC10451589 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_1209_22

The benefit of metformin in the treatment of pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Conclusion: According to the data of this meta-analysis, treatment with metformin failed to statistically improve liver enzymes but may be beneficial in the improvement of lipid parameters and insulin metabolism regulation in pediatric patients with NAFLD. As there are not enough available studies in the literature, the influence of metformin on liver ultrasonography or histology in pediatric NAFLD should be further analyzed in future studies. What is Known:• Lifestyle modification with weight loss through physical activity and dietary modification is the recommended treatment option for pediatric NAFLD.• Metformin may ...

Metformin Impedes Oxidation of LDL In Vitro
Pharmaceutics. 2023 Aug 9;15(8):2111. doi: 10.3390/pharmaceutics15082111.ABSTRACTMetformin is the most commonly prescribed glucose-lowering drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether metformin is capable of impeding the oxidation of LDL, a crucial step in the development of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis. LDL was oxidized by addition of CuCl2 in the presence of increasing concentrations of metformin. The extent of LDL oxidation was assessed by measuring lipid hydroperoxide and malondialdehyde concentrations, relative electrophoretic mobilities, and oxidation-spe...

The Effect of Metformin on Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells and Nude Mice
This study delves deeper into the impact of metformin on TNBC by examining changes in proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, migration, and adhesion of TNBC cells, specifically MDA-MB-231, post-metformin exposure. The treatment of MDA-MB-231 with metformin in immunodeficient nude mice led to discernible changes in tumor metrics such as size, weight, lymph node engagement, and angiogenesis. Post-treatment, MDA-MB-231 cells exhibited a marked decline in proliferation, invasion, migration, and adhesion, alongside a significant rise in apoptosis. In the in vivo model with nude mice, tumors displayed notable reductions in size and...
