Sickle Cell Disease Subjects Have a Distinct Abnormal Autonomic Phenotype Characterized by Peripheral Vasoconstriction With Blunted Cardiac Response to Head-Up Tilt
Conclusion
We have shown that SCD subjects are much more likely than non-SCD subjects to have impaired cardiac, but intact peripheral responses to orthostatic stress induced by HUT. These abnormal responses are associated with low baseline cardiac parasympathetic activity, independent of hemoglobin level. The classification of autonomic phenotypes based on HUT response may have potential use for predicting disease severity, guiding and targeting treatments/interventions to alleviate the risk of adverse outcomes in SCD.

Collectivism Is Associated With Greater Neurocognitive Fluency in Older Adults
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of self-construal on neurocognitive functions in older adults. A total of 86 community-dwelling older adults 60 years and older were assessed with three common self-report measures of self-construal along individualism and collectivism (IC). A cognitive battery was administered to assess verbal and non-verbal fluency abilities. CONCLUSIONS: Research in counselling training for speech-language therapists working in post-stroke aphasia is limited, with a small number of primarily low-quality studies available. Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Management Is Associated with Superior Grade Attainment and High School Graduation Rates
Discussion: In this cohort, a high percentage of patients (86.7%) graduated or were on track to graduate from high school. In the United States, approximately 90% of patients with SCD are African American. All patients analyzed here were African American. Community-Based Stroke Recognition Education and Response: An Evidence-Based Intervention Project.
CONCLUSIONS: FAST was simple to teach and engaging for participants. Using the FAST curriculum in senior center populations increased the participants' awareness of stroke signs and symptoms, and their willingness to activate the 911 emergency system.
IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Educational interventions in the community with older adults can produce increased awareness of stroke symptoms and willingness to respond when necessary.
