Trading-off greenhouse gas emissions and 741/2020 European Union water reuse legislation: An experimental MBR study
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Sep 19:129794. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129794. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA trade-off between greenhouse emissions (direct and indirect) and operational costs in the water treatment sector is of great importance, although only few literature studies exist. The paper presents a comprehensive experimental study on a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant at the Water Resource Recovery Facility of Palermo University (Italy). The MBR pilot plant was aimed at reducing carbon footprint while producing water suitable for water reuse in agriculture. Multiple scenarios were assessed to unveil the best...

Biological activities of the aerial and undergound parts of < em > Gymnadenia nigra < /em > Rchb.f. (syn. < em > Nigritella nigra < /em > (L.) Rchb. f.) from the Italian Alps
This study investigated the bioactivity of both aerial (GNAR) and underground (GNUG) parts of Gymnadenia nigra Rchb.f. (syn. Nigritella nigra (L.) Rchb. f.) (Orchidaceae). The obtained data proved interesting when the samples were tested in two adrenocortical cancer cell lines (SW13 and H295R). In particular, the GNAR 80% methanol extract distinctly inhibited their viability after 24 h at a concentration of 1 µg/µL by MTT assay and trypan blue dye exclusion method. Cell morphology evaluation by means Wright's staining also showed significant results, particularly in SW13 cells under the effect of both extracts. GNAR extr...

Only the best for my kids: An extended TPB model to understand mothers' use of food labels
Appetite. 2023 Sep 18:107040. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107040. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite the evidence that mothers' food purchasing behavior impacts the quality of children's diet, few studies have explored psycho-social factors influencing how mothers choose the food to buy for their children. To fill this gap, this study tested an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model to predict mothers' tendency to seek information on food labels before purchasing food for children. Participants included 311 Italian mothers who completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their information-seeking behavior, TPB...

Malignancy risk in Bethesda class IV thyroid nodules in an iodine deficient region
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with Bethesda IV thyroid nodules, diagnostic lobectomy should be the preferable surgical approach in absence of factors that suggest total thyroidectomy. In our opinion, total thyroidectomy remains the first choice in large nodules (≥4 cm) as these nodules have a high malignancy rate, greater local/lymphovascular invasion and a consequent frequent indication for post-operative radiometabolic treatment.PMID:37727346 | PMC:PMC10506119 | DOI:10.21037/gs-22-491

ANGPTL3 Deficiency and Risk of Hepatic Steatosis
CONCLUSIONS: ANGPTL3 deficiency related to LoF mutations in ANGPTL3, as well as genetically determined reduction of plasma ANGPTL3 levels, is not associated with hepatic steatosis. Therapeutic approaches to inhibit ANGPTL3 production in hepatocytes are not necessarily expected to result in the increased risk for hepatic steatosis that was observed with vupanorsen.PMID:37712257 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.123.065866

Knowledge and behaviours associated with HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections in blood donors in Italy
CONCLUSION: A more comprehensive and updated information on various STIs, transmission modes and safe sex should be provided to blood donors, not only to prevent the spread of these infections but also to avoid unjustified discrimination.PMID:37712234 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_02

Smoking intensity changes during the COVID-19 pandemic waves in a cohort of smokers in Italy
CONCLUSIONS: After 2 years of pandemic, cigarettes/day have not yet returned to the pre-pandemic levels, mainly due to socio-demographic factors, but also to nicotine addiction, that tends to stabilize consumption.PMID:37712240 | DOI:10.4415/ANN_23_03_08
