Epidemiological research as a driver of prevention: the Sibaté study. Commentary. Ann Ist Super Sanita. 2020 Jan-Mar;56(1):6-9 Authors: Ramos-Bonilla JP, Marsili D, Comba P Abstract Although asbestos exposure and risks can be prevented, only five countries in Latin America have banned asbestos, including Colombia. Beginning in 2011, a collaboration between the Istituto Superiore di Sanità in Italy and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia was established, bringing together relevant expertise aiming to improve our understanding of the asbestos problem. An important result of this collaborat...

Additive manufacturing of reconstruction devices for maxillofacial surgery: design and accuracy assessment of a mandibular plate prototype.
Authors: Campioni I, Cacciotti I, Gupta N Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) presents unique opportunities for medical applications and in particular in maxillofacial surgery for developing patient specific implants. The quality assessment of additive manufactured products is an essential aspect for the real introduction in health services. In this framework, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the possibility of developing prototypes of mandibular plates as preoperative surgical planning models, by verification of design, analysis of internal structure integrity and evaluation of the effects of va...

This study investigates the incidence of long-term consequences in survivors of critical illness 6 months after ICU care. A retrospective analysis of the risk factors was also completed. METHODS: A mixed-method design was used. A qualitative design was used in the questionnaire study (phase 1), and a quantitative design was used for the retrospective study (phase 2). RESULTS: 116 patients were interviewed. Forty-eight patients (41.4%) reported at least one long-term consequence 6 months after ICU discharge. The most frequent consequences were anxiety (n = 33, 28.4%), depression (n = 32, 27.6%) and chronic pain (n =...

CONCLUSION: The results show a remarkable and positive impact of the approach above all on the "outcome-oriented" EI. Significant results were also observed about the indicator concerning irrational beliefs. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that an effective NGS-based pipeline led to a definitive diagnosis in two FH families, allowing to plan their therapeutic treatment. Ethics committees and research in Italy: seeking new regulatory frameworks (with a look at the past). Commentary.
Authors: Petrini C, Brusaferro S Abstract The legislation of Italy and the European Union requires a shift in terms of the organisation and national regulation of ethics committees and clinical trials. More generally, this affects the entire sphere of biomedical research. The first part of this contribution provides a brief review of the history of ethics committees in Italy. We then discuss the current situation and formulate proposals. There is a vital need for rules that promote efficiency of ethics committees, to guarantee that Italy's position remains competitive and attractive within the European Union. P...

Multiple chemical sensitivity: pursuit of a scientific consensus, need for a public health response. Commentary.
Authors: Rossi S, Vanacore N, Comba P Abstract On the international scene, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is defined, by several experts, as a multisystem syndrome that develops following chronic exposures to low doses of common chemical contaminants. Its general characteristics are, however, the object of conflicting opinions and a source of debate and research aimed at the appropriate nosological and therapeutic frameworks. In the face of a potentially debilitating trend, both in the occupational and in the economical and social sphere, the scientific community has not so far found an agreement. This problem...

Authors: Murtas R, Andreano A, Greco MT, Tunesi S, Russo AG Abstract The Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research defines national priority contaminated sites (NPCSs) as land where hazardous substances are likely to pose a risk to human health. SENTIERI was the first national project evaluating the health status of residents in NPCSs. Authors: Pelosi E, Castelli G, Testa U Abstract The burden of cancer is increasing worldwide, with a continuous rise of the annual total cases. Although mortality rates due to cancer are declining in developed countries, the total number of cancer deaths continues to rise due to the increase in the number of aged people. Three main causes of cancer have been described, represented by environmental factors, hereditary factors and random factors related to defects originated during cell replication. The frequency of cancers is very different for the various tissues and there is great debate on the extent of the speci...

The usefulness of integrated strategy approaches in replacing animal experimentation.
Authors: Eskes C Abstract It is currently well accepted that in general, more than one method is necessary to allow the full replacement of an animal experimentation. These so called partial replacement methods can be used within integrated strategy approaches that combine different methods and information sources. A number of integrated strategy approaches were implemented within recent years in different areas of safety and regulatory toxicology. Moreover, latest advances in biomedical research and bioengineering provide a major opportunity to make use of in vitro human-based and/or three-dimensional complex mode...

Considering the microbiota to achieve reduction in the numbers of animals used in scientific studies.
Authors: Hansen AK Abstract Elimination of pathogens by laboratory rodent commercial vendors has substantially improved standardized conditions as well as laboratory animal welfare. However, pathogens are also important for basic activation and functioning of the immune system with consequential influences on the symbiotic bacteria composition in the individual microbiota. One of the reasons for failures of translating results from preclinical research to the clinical phase in some studies could be due to unintentional selection processes. Some recommendations are provided to increase researchers' awareness on this...

Refinement techniques in non-human primate neuroscientific research.
Authors: Bonini L Abstract Non-human primates (NHP) are widely considered an essential model for biomedical research because of their close genetic, anatomo-functional and cognitive similarities to humans. These same reasons also raise particular ethical concerns for the unavoidable harm caused to these animals, in particular to those involved in neuroscientific studies. Besides reducing the number of animals needed to the absolute minimum, it is therefore essential to implement procedures allowing, at the same time, to minimize the harm to the animals and maximize the quality and ecological validity of the data. Estimated burden of Chlamydia trachomatis female infection and consequent severe pelvic inflammatory disease, Italy, 2005-2016.
Authors: Sabbatucci M, Salfa MC, Regine V, Pezzotti P, Suligoi B Abstract Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the leading sexually transmitted infection (STI) across Europe. In Italy, Ct prevalence is low in general population, but predominance of asymptomatic infections, passive voluntary reporting, variable diagnostic criteria and coding practices can lead to considerable underestimation, preventing assessment of real burden of disease and health intervention. We analysed data on female genital Ct infection registered in STI sentinel surveillance systems in Italy from 2005 through 2016 and found 3305 women. Among them,...

Authors: Taruscio D, Bermejo-Sánchez E, Salerno P, Mantovani A Abstract Protection of early development contributes to health of next generations. Congenital anomalies (and other adverse reproductive outcomes) are an important public health issue and early indicator of public health risks, as early development is influenced by many risk factors (e.g., nutrition, lifestyles, pollution, infections, medications, etc). Effective primary prevention requires an integrated "One Health" approach, linking knowledge and action. This requires surveillance of health events and potential health-damaging factors...

Patient empowerment of people living with rare diseases. Its contribution to sustainable and resilient healthcare systems.
Authors: De Santis M, Hervas C, Weinman A, Bosi G, Bottarelli V Abstract The notion of empowerment is linked to patients' everyday life and is the base allowing for the patient engagement through which individuals and communities are able to express their needs, are involved in decision-making, take action to meet those needs. In the field of rare diseases, empowerment strategies have greater value due to low prevalence, lack of expertise, poor quality of life. Avenues to patient empowerment are: health literacy and capacity-building; shared decision-making; support to self-management. Patient empowerment is recogn...
