Quantitative proteomics based bioactive proteins discovery and quality control of medicinal leeches
CONCLUSIONS: This work profiled the proteome of three species of leeches, and addressed potential active proteins of the medicinal leech, which would help to provide the potential molecular mechanisms involved in disease treatment. The proteomics-based approach developed in this work is not only useful for the discovery of proteins with potential bioactivities but also helpful for the bioactivity relevant quality control of animal medicines.PMID:37659761 | DOI:10.1016/j.jep.2023.117117

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with epilepsy and epilepsy specialists
CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed PWE to harmful consequences mainly due to medical shortages and worse life states. During the pandemic, there were delays in the diagnosis of PWE, and doctors' prescription habits changed. We must consider the lessons learned during this period of social restrictions and employ recent technological advances to improve treatment for PWE.PMID:37619465 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109389

Temporal and spatial changes of water quality in intensively developed urban rivers and water environment improvement: a case study of the Longgang River in Shenzhen, China
This study aims to reveal the water environment improvement process of intensively developed urban rivers, elucidate the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of major pollutants, and provide recommendations for their water environment management. Water quality data from eight monitoring sites (2007-2020) in the Longgang River basin in Shenzhen, China, and comprehensive pollution index method (CPI), modified comprehensive pollution index method (M-CPI), and Pearson correlation analysis method were used for comprehensive analysis. The study shows that TN, TP, NH3-N, and COD have the greatest influence on the wat...

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Chinese assisted reproductive technology institutions and human sperm banks: reflections in the post-pandemic era
CONCLUSIONS: Given the growing frequency of outbreaks of global infectious diseases in recent years, ART institutions and human sperm banks should pay attention to improving their prevention and control capabilities. To a certain extent, decisions and measures adopted in China during COVID-19 pandemic are worthy of recognition and acceptance. Chinese scholars have discussed, proactively responded to and understand the key issues surrounding ART development during the pandemic with the aim of contributing to the substantial progress and healthy development of ART services in the world.PMID:37592335 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00422-1

Large mammals and trees in eastern monsoonal China: anthropogenic losses since the Late Pleistocene and restoration prospects in the Anthropocene
Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc. 2023 Apr 27. doi: 10.1111/brv.12968. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMassive human-induced declines of large-sized animals and trees (megabiota) from the Late Pleistocene to the Anthropocene have resulted in downsized ecosystems across the globe, in which components and functions have been greatly simplified. In response, active restoration projects of extant large-sized species or functional substitutes are needed at large scales to promote ecological processes that are important for ecosystem self-regulation and biodiversity maintenance. Despite the desired global scope of such projects, they have...
