Stevens-johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis: An Overview of Diagnosis, Therapy Options and Prognosis of Patients
Recent Adv Inflamm Allergy Drug Discov. 2023 Aug 21. doi: 10.2174/2772270817666230821102441. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBoth Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and Toxic-epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are generally medication-induced pathological conditions that mostly affect the epidermis and mucus membranes. Nearly 1 to 2 patients per 1,000,000 population are affected annually with SJS and TEN, and sometimes these maladies can cause serious life-threatening events. The reported death rates for SJS range from 1 to 5%, and 25 to 35% for TEN. The mortality risk may even be higher among elderly patients, especially in those who a...

Occurrence and removal rate of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in an urban wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China
Chemosphere. 2023 Jul 24:139644. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139644. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe occurrence and removal rate of 52 typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were investigated in a wastewater treatment plant in Beijing, China. Thirty-three PPCPs were found in the influent, with caffeine (CF, 11387.0 ng L-1) being the most abundant, followed by N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET, 9568.4 ng L-1), metoprolol (MTP, 930.2 ng L-1), and diclofenac (DF, 710.3 ng L-1). After treatment processes, the cumulative concentration of PPCPs decreased from 2.54 × 104 ng L-1 to 1.44 × 103 ng L-1, wit...

Genomic insight into transmission mechanisms of carbapenem-producing Citrobacter spp. isolates between the WWTP and connecting rivers
In this study, we investigated the occurrence and potential transmission patterns of CRCS in different functional areas of an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and connecting rivers during one-year monitoring in Shandong Province, China. In total, 14 CRCS were detected in 376 environmental samples, including those from the WWTP inlet (n = 7), WWTP anaerobic tank (n = 2), and rivers (n = 5). Citrobacter braakii (n = 6) was the dominant subtype among 14 CRCS isolates, followed by Citrobacter freundii (n = 5), Citrobacter sedlakii (n = 2), and Citrobacter werkmanii (n = 1). All CRCS were resistant to imipenem, meropenem...

Riverine antibiotic occurrence and potential ecological risks in a low-urbanized and rural basin of the middle Yangtze River: Socioeconomic, land use, and seasonal effects
This study firstly investigated the effects of season, land use, and socioeconomic on the spatiotemporal changes of riverine antibiotic concentrations in a low urbanized and rural watershed. In the dry and wet seasons, water samples were collected and analyzed for 15 antibiotics. The results indicated that 14 antibiotics, excluding leucomycin, were detected. Monsoon led to significantly lower total antibiotic concentrations in the wet season (22.0ngL-1) than in the dry season (51.2ngL-1). Total antibiotic concentrations were dominated by amoxicillin (below limit of detection (<LOD)-34.7ngL-1)), erythromycin-H2O (<LOD...

Synergistic sulfonamides plus clindamycin as an alternative therapeutic regimen for HIV-associated Toxoplasma encephalitis: a randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSIONS: Synergistic sulfonamides plus clindamycin, as a novel treatment regimen, showed no significantly different efficacy and comparable safety in comparison with the TMP-SMX plus azithromycin regimen. In addition, the regimen containing synergistic sulfonamides may exhibit advantages in terms of clinical symptom alleviation.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR.org.cn, ChiCTR1900021195.PMID:36574221 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002498

Distribution and ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products with different anthropogenic stresses in a coastal watershed of China
This study investigated the spatial occurrences and the relationship to sociodemographic parameters of 30 PPCPs in 67 rivers along the Bohai coastal region. The results showed that PPCPs were mainly deposited in aquatic phase, and the partitioning coefficient between water and sediment was highly determined by chemical properties. The levels of 30 PPCPs in rivers ranged from 8.33 to 894.48 ng/L, showing a large variance among regions. Caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, ofloxacin, anhydro-erythromycin, and trimethoprim were found to be the major pollutants. Multivariable analysis method was used to assess the corre...
