Shortening the Frommelt Attitude Toward the Care Of the Dying Scale (FATCOD-B): a Brief 9-Item Version for Medical Education and Practice
AbstractEnd-of-life care training has gaps in helping students to develop attitudes toward caring for the dying. Valid and reliable assessment tools are essential in building effective educational programmes. The Frommelt Attitude Toward the Care Of the Dying scale (FATCOD-B) is widely used to measure the level of comfort/discomfort in caring for the dying and to test the effectiveness of end-of-life care training. However, its psychometric properties have been questioned and different proposals for refinement and shortening have been put forward. The aim of this study is to get to a definitive reduction of the FATCOD-B th...

Clinical Objectives of the Canadian Licensing Examination: Exploring the Representation of Oncology
AbstractEvery physician should be comfortable caring for cancer patients, yet medical education in oncology is known as inadequate. Our study explored this issue from an assessment perspective, by determining the representation of oncology and other health priorities in the clinical learning objectives for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE Part 1). The Medical Council of Canada lists objectives for the MCCQE Part 1, based on CanMEDS roles for medical graduate competency. These objectives guide exam question development and can be used as a study guide for learners. Our study focused on the ...

Publication date: Available online 7 March 2019Source: Practical Radiation OncologyAuthor(s): Trevor J. Royce, Kathleen T. Davenport, James M. DahleAbstractPhysician burnout is reported in more than one out of every two practicing clinicians and is just as prevalent in training physicians. Impact of 10-Day Fulbright Specialist Program and Project Pink Blue Education Sessions on Medical Oncology Knowledge Among Physicians Who Treat Cancer in Nigeria
AbstractDespite an estimated population of over 201 million and over 115,950 yearly diagnosed new cases of cancer, Nigeria does not have dedicated medical oncologists. Most oncology care is delivered through surgical and clinical oncologists, who are trained in both radiation and medical oncology and they number fewer than 50 in the country. With a limited number of oncology professionals, cancer patients in Nigeria experience poor health outcomes, with an estimated cancer mortality rate of 75,000 deaths per year. Participants from 15 Nigerian states were selected to attend the medical oncology training. Through the suppor...

A systematic review of interventions to recognise, refer and diagnose patients with lung cancer symptoms
NPJ Prim Care Respir Med. 2022 Oct 18;32(1):42. doi: 10.1038/s41533-022-00312-9.ABSTRACTPatients with lung cancer (LC) often experience delay between symptom onset and treatment. Primary healthcare professionals (HCPs) can help facilitate early diagnosis of LC through recognising early signs and symptoms and making appropriate referrals. This systematic review describes the effect of interventions aimed at helping HCPs recognise and refer individuals with symptoms suggestive of LC. Seven studies were synthesised narratively. Outcomes were categorised into: Diagnostic intervals; referral and diagnosis patterns; stage distri...
