Mortality by treatment in patients ≥80 years of age with gastroesophageal cancer seen in a 20-year period at a single medical center.
Abstract The treatment approach to patients 80 years of age and older with gastroesophageal cancer at Baylor Scott and White in Temple, Texas, has historically favored conservative measures in the form of palliation and observation. To evaluate this trend in practice, the administered treatments and subsequent patient outcomes of this group were retrospectively reviewed. The study group included all patients 80 years of age and older with a diagnosis of gastroesophageal cancer seen at our facility between 1991 and 2010. Of the 117 cases, 49% received none of the available treatment modalities. The median overall s...

Effectiveness and safety of cabazitaxel chemotherapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostatic carcinoma on Turkish patients (The Anatolian Society of Medical Oncology).
CONCLUSIONS: This study reflects toxicity profile of Turkish patients as a Caucasian race. We suggest that cabazitaxel is a safe and effective treatment option for mCRPC patients who progress after docetaxel. Moreover, ethnicity may play important roles both in treatment response and in toxicity profile. PMID: 27097941 [PubMed - in process]

Monteris Medical raises $7m for NeuroBlate
Monteris Medical raised nearly $7 million of a hoped-for $10 million debt-and-options round for the NeuroBlate neurosurgery device it’s developing. Plymouth, Minn.-based Monteris last month won FDA approval for an investigational device exemption trial of NeuroBlate in patients newly diagnosed with a form of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme. The MRI-guided device is designed to ablate, necrotize or coagulate soft tissue during neurosurgery procedures using laser thermotherapy. A pair of unnamed investors participated in the $6.8 million round, according to a Nov. 18 regulatory filing. Monteris has s...

Pilot study assessing the direct medical cost of treating patients with cancer in Kenya; findings and implications for the future.
CONCLUSION: The cost of cancer treatment in Kenya depends on the type of cancer, the modality, cost of medicines and the type of inpatient admission. The greatest contributors are currently the cost of medicines and inpatient admissions. This pilot study can inform future initiatives among the government as well as private and public insurance companies to increase available resources, and better allocate available resources, to more effectively treat patients with cancer in Kenya. We will be monitoring developments and conducting further research. PMID: 29860920 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Treatment patterns and direct medical costs among patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.
Conclusions: In patients who received first-line therapy for HCC, the duration of therapy was short (potentially due to progression or tolerability). Most patients did not continue to second-line therapy. Despite the short duration of therapy, HCC patients still incur a high economic burden, and there is a need for more effective and tolerable treatments. Perspectives of Medical Specialists on Sharing Decisions in Cancer Care: A Qualitative Study Concerning Chemotherapy Decisions With Patients With Recurrent Glioblastoma.
CONCLUSION: Medical specialists recognized the importance of patient involvement but experienced difficulty in sharing decision making in practice. Elements of shared decision making are partly followed but do not guide decision making. To improve cancer care, education of medical specialists and adjustment to the elements are needed to involve patients. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study assessed medical specialists' perspectives on sharing decision making with patients with recurrent glioblastoma. Medical specialists experienced difficulty with shared decision making in this setting. The main barriers to shared d...

Evaluating Nurses' Knowledge of Chemotherapy.
CONCLUSION: The evidence-based results suggested that nurses have insufficient knowledge about chemotherapy. More fundamentally, however, nurses need more education about chemotherapy in nursing school and through in-hospital continuing education. J Contin Educ Nurs 2013;44(X):xx-xx. Inappropriate antibiotic prescribing by online pharmacies 'reckless'
Conclusion Worryingly, most of the online pharmacies had no evidence of the registration required by current UK and European legislation. This could be because some of the operators were based outside Europe – but regardless of where they are based, they are still subject to UK legislation if selling to the UK public. The study raises concerns about the effectiveness of current UK legislation and the regulation of companies selling antibiotics over the internet. This research does have some limitations, however: Google and Yahoo searches are not identical when different browsers are used or when searches are per...

Perioperative Care of Children Undergoing Intra-arterial Chemotherapy for Retinoblastoma
Retinoblastoma (RB) is a rare cancer of the eye, most commonly seen in children. Intra-arterial chemotherapy for RB is a relatively new treatment modality that has gained increasing popularity worldwide. The principal underlying the intra-arterial approach is delivery of chemotherapeutic agents directly to the site of the tumor. This avoids system toxicities normally associated with higher dose of these drugs. The purpose of this continuing education article was to review the features of RB and its treatment, with a focus on the perioperative management of children undergoing intra-arterial chemotherapy at our institution.

Investigation of the Readability and Reliability of Online Health Information for Cancer Patients During the Coronavirus Pandemic
AbstractFor cancer patients undergoing treatment who may be at higher risk of COVID-19, access to high-quality online health information (OHI) may be of particular importance amidst a plethora of harmful medical misinformation online. Therefore, we assessed the readability and quality of OHI available for various cancer types and treatment modalities. Search phrases included “cancer radiation COVID,” “cancer surgery COVID,” “cancer chemotherapy COVID,” and “cancer type COVID,” for the fourteen most common cancer types (e.g., “prostate cancer COVID” and “breast cancer COVID”), yielding a total of 17 ...

Health Education and Nursing Needs of Breast Cancer Patients With Totally Implantable Venous Access Ports at Different Stages
CONCLUSIONS: BC patients' needs for health education and nursing vary at different stages when using TIVAPs. Nurses are the main source of knowledge about TIVAP in different periods for BC patients, and the nurses should obtain multidisciplinary health knowledge to enhance the benefits of the education for patients. The current education for patient is traditional, and hospitals need to implement new modes of education such as medical systems and network platforms, lectures, and posters for health education.PMID:36239566
