Wearable sensors: Can they benefit patients with chronic kidney disease?
This article ponders upon wearable medical measurement devices in relation to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and its' associated comorbidities - and whether these might benefit CKD-patients. We aimed to map the intersection(s) of nephrology and wearable sensor technology to help technologists understand medical aspects, and clinicians to understand technological possibilities that are available (or soon will become so). Areas covered A structured literature search on main comorbidities and complications CKD patients suffer from, was used to steer mini-reviews on wearable sensor technologies clustered around 3 themes being: C...

An intervention design: supporting skills development for peritoneal dialysis trainers.
CONCLUSION: The need for the development of a comprehensive and standardized curriculum for PD nurse trainers and their patients was confirmed. This paper outlines the process of the development of this curriculum. Pilot testing of the modules was launched in late 2017 to examine feasibility, and planning has commenced for a RCT in 2019 to investigate the effect of the modules on clinical outcomes, and their wider application across Australia and New Zealand. Death review of children receiving medical care at home
CONCLUSIONS: Improvement of devices and correct guidance to caregivers may reduce the death rate in children receiving home medical care.IMPACT: Children receiving home medical care, such as tracheostomy care, mechanical ventilation, or tube feeding, need special attention to prevent unexpected death. In this population-based child death review, 6% of children received home medical care, and it was estimated that 1 of 100 children receiving home medical care died per year. One-quarter of the deaths could be preventable by caregiver education or development of devices.PMID:34239067 | PMC:PMC8265292 | DOI:10.1038/s41390-021-01606-3

Is Continuing Anticoagulation or Antiplatelet Therapy Safe Prior to Kidney Transplantation?
CONCLUSIONS Continuing anticoagulation or antiplatelet was safe in not increasing bleeding complications or perioperative transfusion requirements. Outcomes were similar at 3 and 6 months among groups. This strategy avoids exposing patients to risk of thrombosis if treatment is held and simplifies proceeding to transplantation.PMID:34580271 | DOI:10.12659/AOT.931648

Medical adjuvant treatment to increase patency of arteriovenous fistulae and grafts.
CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analyses of three studies for ticlopidine (an anti-platelet treatment), which all used the same dose of treatment but with a short follow-up of only one month, suggest ticlopidine may have a beneficial effect as an adjuvant treatment to increase the patency of AV fistulae and grafts in the short term. There was insufficient evidence to determine if there was a difference in graft patency between placebo and other treatments such as aspirin, fish oil, clopidogrel, PRT-201, dipyridamole, dipyridamole plus aspirin, warfarin, and sulphinpyrazone. However, the quality of the evidence was low due to short f...

Attendees' feedback on king abdulaziz medical city pilot chronic kidney disease education class.
Abstract Despite similar or better patient outcomes, peritoneal dialysis and pre-emptive kidney transplantation are underutilized in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, most patients with end-stage renal disease begin dialysis in unplanned fashion necessitating the commencement of dialysis using central venous catheter access. We aimed to investigate if early patient education can help in overcoming these barriers. The study is a survey-based study at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh Dialysis Center. In January 2017, we started a monthly Chronic Kidney Disease Education Class in our center. Since then, 14 classes have take...
