Factors influencing series completion rates of recombinant herpes zoster vaccine in the United States: A retrospective pharmacy and medical claims analysis
CONCLUSION: Pharmacists contribute substantially to the overall high RZV completion rates in the United States. However, completion rates can be improved, especially in people receiving their first RZV dose at a physician's office. Future strategies should aim at lowering barriers to completing vaccination series in African Americans, Medicaid beneficiaries, and people with comorbidities.PMID:34893442 | DOI:10.1016/j.japh.2021.11.010

Direct Medical Costs of Four Vaccine-Preventable Infectious Diseases in Older Adults in Spain
CONCLUSION: The direct economic burden of herpes zoster, pneumococcal disease, influenza and pertussis in adults 45 years and older was high in Spain, and may be underestimated as it only considered medical assistance and not other applicable direct or indirect costs. Increasing vaccination rates in adults may potentially reduce the economic burden derived from these diseases, although future cost-effectiveness analysis including other disease-related costs, vaccination costs and vaccination effectiveness would be needed.PMID:35254649 | PMC:PMC8899779 | DOI:10.1007/s41669-022-00329-3

Management of herpesvirus reactivations in patients with solid tumours and hematologic malignancies: update of the Guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Working Party (AGIHO) of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO) on herpes simplex virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 2, and varicella zoster virus
Ann Hematol. 2022 Jan 7. doi: 10.1007/s00277-021-04746-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTClinical reactivations of herpes simplex virus or varicella zoster virus occur frequently among patients with malignancies and manifest particularly as herpes simplex stomatitis in patients with acute leukaemia treated with intensive chemotherapy and as herpes zoster in patients with lymphoma or multiple myeloma. In recent years, knowledge on reactivation rates and clinical manifestations has increased for conventional chemotherapeutics as well as for many new antineoplastic agents. This guideline summarizes current evidence on herpesvi...

Costs of adult vaccination in medical settings and pharmacies: an observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: The average direct costs paid per adult vaccination were lower in pharmacies compared with physician offices and other medical settings by 16%-26% and 11%-20%, respectively. These results were mostly consistent across geographic regions and types of health plans. These data may help payers and policymakers understand the economic value of adult vaccination in different settings, especially in pharmacies. PMID: 25166292 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of medical and/or pharmacy reimbursement on adult vaccination rates.
CONCLUSIONS:  Among members with commercial health insurance, HZV and PV rates were significantly higher among those whose insurance covered vaccinations under both medical and pharmacy benefits, compared with members whose insurance covered vaccines under the medical benefit only. Pharmacy-based vaccination coverage from commercial health insurance plans may help improve adult vaccination rates. PMID: 30020746 [PubMed - in process]

Self-report compared to electronic medical record across eight adult vaccines: Do results vary by demographic factors?
Abstract Immunizations are crucial to the prevention of disease, thus, having an accurate measure of vaccination status for a population is an important guide in targeting prevention efforts. In order to comprehensively assess the validity of self-reported adult vaccination status for the eight most common adult vaccines we conducted a survey of vaccination receipt and compared it to the electronic medical record (EMR), which was used as the criterion standard, in a population of community-dwelling patients in a large healthcare system. In addition, we assessed whether validity varied by demographic factors. The v...

Population-based study of the epidemiology of herpes zoster in Korea.
Authors: Kim YJ, Lee CN, Lim CY, Jeon WS, Park YM Abstract General epidemiological data regarding herpes zoster (HZ) are necessary for treatment and prevention of this disease. In addition, epidemiological data can play an important role in evaluating the efficacy and impact of vaccination. Though several epidemiological studies of HZ in Korea have been conducted, they usually depend on hospital-based data and may not be representative of HZ characteristics all over Korea. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and other epidemiological features of HZ in the general Korean population. We used popul...

Impact assessment of an educational course on vaccinations in a population of medical students
The inadequate formation and knowledge about vaccinations of healthcare workers, including doctors, has certainly contributed to the spread of the vaccine hesitancy in recent years. Therefore, it is essential to improve the level of knowledge of future doctors so that they can deal with any hesitation within the population in order to increase the vaccination coverage. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of a course about vaccination on the knowledge of medical students. In order to evaluate the efficacy of a certain lecture about vaccinations on medical students, they were asked to complete an anonymous question...

Complications and cost estimations in herpes zoster - a retrospective analysis at a Swiss tertiary dermatology clinic
CONCLUSION: In this herpes zoster population at a university hospital, one in three patients was affected by herpes zoster-related complications. Age and cancer were independently associated with a high complication rate, suggesting a need to vaccinate cancer patients. Herpes zoster-related complications and the need for inpatient treatment escalated the costs per case.PMID:34964592 | DOI:10.4414/smw.2021.w30081
