Introductory Resident-Led Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Case-Based Ultrasound Workshop for Medical Students
The core clinical ultrasound milestones for medical students in the United States do not cover the majority of clinical topics pertinent to the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation. In addition, one of the major barriers to teaching physical medicine and rehabilitation residents ultrasound is a lack of instructors with sufficient experience. A solution to both of these problems is the establishment of a resident-led case-based ultrasound workshop for medical students that introduces them to the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. This novel workshop involved 30 medical students and 9 resident instru...

Associations between residency selection strategies and doctor performance: a meta‐analysis
ConclusionsStandardised examination performance and medical school grades show the strongest associations with current measures of doctor performance. Deans' letters, reference letters and interviews all show a lower than expected strength of association given the relative value often assigned to them during resident doctor selection. Objective selection strategies are potentially the most useful to residency selection committees based on current evaluative methods. However, reports in the literature of validated long‐term doctor performance outcomes are scant.

Impact of the implementation of the AAN epilepsy quality measures on the medical records in a university hospital
Background: The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) suggested eight quality measures to be observed at every patient visit. The aim of this work is to compare the percentage of documentation of each measure before and after the implementation of a new worksheet in a third-level center. Methods: Quasi-experimental study including medical records filled by medical school seniors and junior residents supervised by an epileptologist. The authors surveyed 80 consecutive charts of people with epilepsy who were seen in the outpatient clinic before and after the intervention. McNemar change test was used to compare the percentages...

Diffusion methods for aligning medical datasets: Location prediction in CT scan images
Graphical abstract: Highlights: Abstract: The purpose of this study is to introduce diffusion methods as a tool to label CT scan images according to their position in the human body. A comparative study of different methods based on a k-NN search is carried out and we propose a new, simple and efficient way of applying diffusion techniques that is able to give better location forecasts than methods that can be considered the current state-of-the-art.

A Retrospective Analysis of Abdominal Competency Scores to Improve Clinical Education in a Sonography Program
Classroom examinations and a passing score on a sonography certification examination are means to assess a student’s retention of material presented during didactic education and further studying. Typically, however, clinical competencies are graded based on actual observation of scanning skills and the ability to identify specific organs and associated abnormalities. We are reporting an analysis of the data collected from students’ completed abdominal competency evaluations over the past four years to determine what organ was the easiest to learn to scan, what organ was the most difficult to learn to scan, and...

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence - podcast
The most intensive ever search for alien lifeThis week it was revealed that astronomers are about to start the most intensive ever search for alien life. The Breakthrough Listen project will scan stars in 100 galaxies for radio and optical signatures that indicate someone, or something, is out there.Until now, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - or SETI - has been met with an eerie silence. What makes scientists so convinced it's worthwhile looking for alien life? Continue reading...

Development and Validation of the Scan of Postgraduate Educational Environment Domains (SPEED): A Brief Instrument to Assess the Educational Environment in Postgraduate Medical Education
by Johanna Schönrock-Adema, Maartje Visscher, A. N. Janet Raat, Paul L. P. Brand Introduction Current instruments to evaluate the postgraduate medical educational environment lack theoretical frameworks and are relatively long, which may reduce response rates. We aimed to develop and validate a brief instrument that, based on a solid theoretical framework for educational environments, solicits resident feedback to screen the postgraduate medical educational environment quality. Methods Stepwise, we developed a screening instrument, using existing instruments to assess educational environment quality and adopting a theoret...

Correspondence India's medical education system hit by scandals
The World Report by Dinesh Sharma1 that described the sad state of corruption in India's medical school entrance examination was quite thought provoking.1 A closer look at the situation brings out disappointing anecdotes, including parents prepared to spend large quantities of money for their children to pass medical entrance examinations, the involvement of criminal networks, and doctors and medical students actively participating in unethical activities such as sitting examinations in place of applicants.

Duty Hours Revisited
Resident duty hours and the controversy they spawned in medical education started in 2000. Evidence to support these restrictions was scant, but the current state at the time was described as onerous for trainees, one lacking in faculty oversight, and graduate competence was suspect. In retrospect, it is easy to say that some change was needed and external forces intervened by demanding changes and duty hours were spawned. Although numerous attempts to discount duty hours or modify them in a substantive way by the educational program leaders, little change was effected and in fact restrictions were increased in 2011.

Value of artisanal simulators to teach ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy using a tru-cut needle for veterinary and medical students.
Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the applicability of artisanal simulators to teach veterinary and medical students the ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy using a tru-cut needle. The artisanal simulators consisted of bovine liver between two layers of commercially available grape gelatin. Students were paired, with one doing the biopsy and the other the ultrasound guidance. After performing the biopsies, each student answered a questionnaire with close-ended questions using a visual analog scale. The evaluated items were realism of the model, liver scanning, procedure instructions, biopsy feasibilit...
