An analysis of the iatrogenic biliary injury after robotic cholecystectomy. Current data and future considerations.
CONCLUSIONS: Robotic cholecystectomy is a safe and adequate alternative to conventional laparoscopic or open approach in term of safety. Furthermore, surgeons must be already experienced and familiar with robotic techniques, so as to overcome the problem of the bile duct injury. PMID: 30280793 [PubMed - in process]

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the treatment of liver hydatid cyst using meta-MUMS tool: comparing PAIR and laparoscopic procedures.
Conclusions: This study shows promising trends toward an advantage of PAIR procedures in treatment of liver hydatid cyst in comparison with laparoscopic procedures. The PAIR procedure is superior to laparoscopy due to having a higher cure rate and lower complication and mortality rates; however, the latter has a lower recurrence rate. PMID: 30899281 [PubMed]

Cost containment: an experience with surgeon education and universal preference cards at two institutions
ConclusionsIn this study, surgeon education alone was not effective in reducing operating room disposable supply costs. Surgeon education, combined with the implementation of universal preference cards, significantly maintains reductions in operating room supply costs. As health care costs continue to increase in the US and internationally, universal preference cards can be an effective tool to contain cost for common laparoscopic general surgery procedures.

Assessment of education effects on patient involvement and bariatric treatment outcome: an observational study.
Conclusions: This study results should encourage the establishment of education as a permanent element of the LSG procedure. PMID: 32117499 [PubMed]

Bacteremic cholangitis due to Raoultella planticola complicating intrahepatic bile duct stricture 5 years post-laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a case report
ConclusionsAn in-depth search of the current literature did not yield other similar cases ofR. planticola infections. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, our case is the first case ofR. planticola isolated from post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as part of biliary sepsis not associated with gastroenteritis. The late onset of the infection in our patient and the results of thein silico analysis suggest thatR. planticola may have survived exposure to the host immune system through the creation of an intracellular biofilm or in a non-culturable but viable state (NCBV) for the 5-year period. Thein s...

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the training of general surgery residents
ConclusionThe pandemic reduced the hands-on activities of general surgery residents, while training in laparoscopy was deficient both before and during the pandemic. New training methods should be sought and used in order to adapt the educational system to the current context.

Learning of Intracorporal Knot Tying in Minimally Invasive Surgery by Video or Expert Instruction
Conclusion For the laparoscopically inexperienced, training in ICKT through expert instruction presents an advantage compared with video-based self-study in the form of faster understanding of the procedure and the associated consistent implementation of good knot quality. Both teaching methods significantly improved participants' ICKT skills. How is Endometriosis Diagnosed?
Discussion Endometriosis is classically defined as endometrial tissue occurring outside the uterine lining. It is a common cause of chronic pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea in adolescents. It can present differently in adolescents than adult women and usually can appear like many other common problems such as chronic constipation or gastrointestinal dysmotility. It is estimated that ~25-38% of adolescents with chronic pelvic pain have endometriosis. Use of clinical criteria versus laparoscopic documentation of disease makes the epidemiology of this problem more challenging. The cause is not wholly agreed upon but many believe ...

Acute appendicitis and situs viscerum inversus: radiological and surgical approach —a systematic review
ConclusionAcute appendicitis can occur in association of rare anatomical anomalies and in these cases diagnosis can be challenging. Situs viscerum inversus and midgut malrotation should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of a patient with left lower quadrant pain, especially in younger population. Besides clinical features, it is fundamental to implement the diagnostic progress with radiological examination. Laparoscopic approach is useful to identify and treat acute surgical emergency and it is also a diagnostic tool and can be tailored in order to offer the best exposition of the operatory field for each single case.

Comparison of laparoscopic common bile duct exploration and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography combined with laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients with gallbladder and common bile duct stones a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSIONS: Both LC+LCBDE and LC+ERCP are safe, effective, and minimal-invasive treatments for concomitant gallbladder and CBD stones. LC-LCBDE was associated with comparable effects compared with LC+ERCP in terms of surgical success rate, stone clearance rate, retained stones rate, operation time, and total morbidity. At the same time, LC-LCBDE had a higher rate of bile leakage and a lower rate of postoperative pancreatitis, cholangitis, and hemorrhage.PMID:37259749 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202305_32477
