Development, implementation, and results of a  simulation-based hands-on brachytherapy workshop for medical students
ConclusionThe simulation-based medical education course for multicatheter brachytherapy can improve self-assessed technical competence. Residency programs should provide resources for this essential component of radiation oncology. This course is exemplary for the development of innovative practical and competence-based teaching formats to meet the current reforms in medical education.

Multiatlas segmentation of thoracic and abdominal anatomy with level set-based local search.
Abstract Segmentation of organs at risk (OARs) remains one of the most time-consuming tasks in radiotherapy treatment planning. Atlas-based segmentation methods using single templates have emerged as a practical approach to automate the process for brain or head and neck anatomy, but pose significant challenges in regions where large interpatient variations are present. We show that significant changes are needed to autosegment thoracic and abdominal datasets by combining multi-atlas deformable registration with a level set-based local search. Segmentation is hierarchical, with a first stage detecting bulk organ l...

A review of the documentation in the British Armed Forces electronic patient record following discharge from the Role 3 Hospital in Camp Bastion
This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the primary care EPR contained an accurate summary of the secondary care admission. Methods Cross-sectional information on consecutive General Internal Medicine patients at the hospital was collected and compared with the primary care EPR. Results From April 2011 the hospital records of 270 patients were reviewed. 239 primary care records were available for comparison. Of 185 patients discharged back to their unit the EPR of 43.8% contained a comprehensive summary, 23.2% contained the scanned discharge letter and 50.8% contained an account of their hospital admission bu...

Researchers Want Cancer Patients To Share Their Medical Information In Search of Cures
April Doyle, a single mom from Visalia, Cal., only lets herself look three months into her future. Since she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, she’s tried a new treatment every three months to keep the cancer from spreading from her breast tissue to other parts of her body. But it returned: this time in her bone. She is almost out of options for her hard-to-treat cancer, but she finds comfort in online support groups where other women with metastatic breast cancer share their experiences. “Eventually we know we will exhaust all of our options until they keep coming up with more treatments,” ...

Medical interventions for the prevention of platinum-induced hearing loss in children with cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: At the moment there is no evidence from individual studies in children with osteosarcoma or hepatoblastoma treated with different platinum analogues and dosage schedules that underscores the use of amifostine as an otoprotective intervention as compared to no additional treatment. Since pooling of results was not possible and the evidence was of low certainty, no definitive conclusions can be made. Since we found only one RCT evaluating the use of sodium thiosulfate in children with localized hepatoblastoma treated with cisplatin, no definitive conclusions on benefits and harms can be drawn. It should be noted...

The Effectiveness of Using 3D Reconstruction Software for Surgery to Augment Surgical Education
Conclusions3D-reconstruction software could be a viable tool to augment radiology education within a surgery residency, especially in CT interpretation, but there appears to be a minimum threshold of knowledge needed for meaningful improvement; therefore, this software may be more useful for PGY3-5 residents than PGY1-2 residents.

Investigating the use of quick response codes in the gross anatomy laboratory
This study examined student perceptions on the usefulness of QR codes as learning aids in a medical gross anatomy course, statistically analyzed whether this learning aid impacted student performance, and evaluated whether performance could be explained by the frequency of QR code usage. Question prompts and QR codes tagged on cadaveric specimens and models were available for four weeks as learning aids to medical (n = 155) and doctor of physical therapy (n = 39) students. Each QR code provided answers to posed questions in the form of embedded text or hyperlinked web pages. Students' perceptions were gathered usin...

Automated Anatomic Labeling Architecture for Content Discovery in Medical Imaging Repositories
AbstractThe combination of textual data with visual features is known to enhance medical image search capabilities. However, the most advanced imaging archives today only index the studies ’ available meta-data, often containing limited amounts of clinically useful information. This work proposes an anatomic labeling architecture, integrated with an open source archive software, for improved multimodal content discovery in real-world medical imaging repositories. The proposed soluti on includes a technical specification for classifiers in an extensible medical imaging archive, a classification database for querying over ...

Gel Rounds: Integrating Bedside Ultrasound Training for Third-Year Medical Students Into the Internal Medicine Clerkship
Despite formal ultrasound training becoming prevalent in preclinical medical student education, significant barriers remain to the continuation of this training during clinical years. We sought to develop a program for third-year medical students to continue ultrasound training after an already robust preclinical ultrasound curriculum and evaluate their scanning confidence after participation. We developed a program to facilitate bedside ultrasound scanning of patients being cared for by third-year students. Students identified appropriate patients to be scanned, obtained consent for scanning, and determined which scans we...

The Association of Microaggressions with Depressive Symptoms and Institutional Satisfaction Among a National Cohort of Medical Students
ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the largest study on the experiences and influences of microaggressions among a national sample of US medical students. Our major findings were that microaggressions are frequent occurrences and that the experience of microaggressions was associated with a positive depression screening and decreased medical school satisfaction.
