Idiopathic omental hemorrhage: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionPresence of positive focused assessment with sonography in trauma, abdominal pain, imaging evidence of fluid accumulation, and a reduction in hemoglobin levels collectively indicate the likelihood of arteriovenous malformation occurrence. The treatment options include surgical intervention and transcatheter arterial embolization. Surgical intervention is recommended for subjects with hemodynamic instability, persistent hypotension and those whose diagnosis is unconfirmed.

The Optimal Frequency of Endoscopic Skill Labs for Training and Skill Retention on Suturing: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: Short-term, once daily 1.5-hours session seems most beneficial for learning intracorporeal endoscopic suturing. After 6 months, distributed shorter training still remains better than massed practice but weekly training and daily training are comparable. “Optional Deliberate Practice” between the official training sessions reduces skill decay.

Standardized Laparoscopic Simulation Positively Affects a Student's Surgical Experience
Conclusions: Our results demonstrate how a standardized orientation to basic laparoscopy can make a positive effect on a student's experience; however, it fails to transition into a student's interest in surgery as a profession or in their perceived comfort level in the operating room. Our study suggests that a student's surgical interest is highly variable and composed of multiple experiences that occur during their clerkship that ultimately affects their perception of surgery as a field and profession.

Robotic‐assisted hepatic resection: a systematic review
ConclusionsOur systematic review suggests robotic‐assisted hepatic resection is safe and feasible, with low mortality and morbidity rates. Further research is needed to determine if oncological outcomes are similar. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Long-term oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic versus open partial nephrectomy.
CONCLUSION: The results of this meta-analysis revealed that there was no significant difference in long-term oncologic outcome between LPN and OPN for treatment of localized renal tumors. PMID: 23924472 [PubMed - in process]

Acupuncture for pain in endometriosis.
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain in endometriosis is limited, based on the results of only a single study that was included in this review. This review highlights the necessity for developing future studies that are well-designed, double-blinded, randomized controlled trials that assess various types of acupuncture in comparison to conventional therapies. Perioperative outcomes of laparoscopic versus open splenectomy for nontraumatic diseases: a meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: LS is superior to OS for nontraumatic diseases, with reduced operative blood loss, need for blood transfusion, postoperative morbidity and mortality rates, and length of hospital stay, although OS is associated with reduced operation time. LS may be a good alternative to OS for patients with nontraumatic splenic diseases. PMID: 24985592 [PubMed - in process]

Preoperative pain management education: a quality improvement project.
Abstract The management of pain is one of the greatest clinical challenges for nurses who care for patients during the postoperative period. It can be even more challenging for patients who must manage their own pain after discharge from the health care facility. Research shows that postoperative pain continues to be undermanaged despite decades of education and evidence-based guidelines. Ineffective management of postoperative pain can negatively impact multiple patient outcomes. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a preoperative pain management patient education i...

Ultrasound-guided Transversus Abdominis Plane Block for Analgesia in Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Abstract Objectives: To evaluated the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block for patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Materials and Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials that compared ultrasound-guided TAP block to control for analgesia in adult patients undergoing LC. The original data were pooled for the meta-analysis using Review Manager 5. The main outcomes included postoperative pain intensity, opioid consumption, and adverse events. Seven trials out of 77 were included. Results: Compared with control, u...

A laparoscopy-based method for BRDF estimation from in vivo human liver
Computer Graphics (CG) has collected important results in the search for a faithful virtual representation of scenes and behaviors in the environment as a whole. The increase of computational power seen in recent years has driven the implementation of visual appealing results in various fields of human activity. One of the most important beneficiaries of such results is Medicine. In particular, a vast field of study involves the development of techniques to make viable simulations of surgeries. These applications focus on the anatomical fidelity of three-dimensional scenes, as well as on the realism of the produced images.
