Precision patient education using a "flipped classroom" approach
CONCLUSIONS: Patient engagement with the education material was high, and they continued to access it many times. Active learning enhances patient comprehension of complex treatment information leading to decreased anxiety. Furthermore, this technique can be incorporated into existing telemedicine with basic technology.PMID:35482549 | DOI:10.1002/acm2.13601

Visual-search observers for assessing tomographic x-ray image quality.
CONCLUSIONS: The computationally efficient training requirements for the VS observer are suitable for high-resolution imaging, indicating that the observer framework has the potential to overcome important task limitations of current model observers for x-ray applications. Manual search approaches used by systematic reviewers in dermatology.
CONCLUSIONS: Authors of systematic reviews published in dermatology journals in our study sample scanned reference lists more frequently than they conducted hand-searches, possibly contributing to biased search outcomes. We encourage systematic reviewers to routinely practice hand-searching in order to minimize bias. PMID: 27822152 [PubMed - in process]

Family medicine education in rural communities as a health service intervention supporting recruitment and retention of physicians: Advancing Rural Family Medicine: The Canadian Collaborative Taskforce.
CONCLUSION: The work of the task force provides an opportunity to bring the various partners together in a coordinated way. By understanding who is responsible and the actions each stakeholder needs to take to make the recommendations a reality, the task force can lay the groundwork for developing a coordinated, comprehensive health human resource strategy that considers the integral role of medical education as a health system intervention. Coordinate-based fast lightweight path search algorithm for electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy
AbstractElectromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) uses electromagnetic positioning technology to guide the bronchoscope to accurately and quickly reach the lesion along the planned path. However, enormous data in high-resolution lung computed tomography (CT) and the complex structure of multilevel branching bronchial tree make fast path search challenging for path planning. We propose a coordinate-based fast lightweight path search (CPS) algorithm for ENB. First, the centerline is extracted from the bronchial tree by applying topological thinning. Then, Euclidean-distance-based coordinate search is applied. The centerl...

Medical fitness to drive, emergency service vehicles and crash risk
ConclusionsGiven issues of speed, vehicle and environment, it would seem prudent to mandate levels of medical fitness to drive similar to and sometimes exceeding (i.e. colour blindness for traffic signals and alerts, hearing impairment as first responders) those for group 2 drivers with extra stipulations relating to specific service needs such as enhanced visual (such as colour blindness and contrast sensitivity) and auditory function. Further research is needed on the prevalence and emergence of relevant medical conditions among ESV drivers, with due consideration of their application to the driving tasks in each service.

Integrating Sonography Training Into Undergraduate Medical Education: A Study of the Previous Exposure of One Institution's Incoming Residents
Conclusions— Point-of-care sonography is inconsistently taught in medical school. The interns in our study also thought that sonography education should begin in medical school, and sonography should be taught by using simulation and at the bedside.

Utility of positron emission tomography imaging in the diagnosis of chronic Q fever: A Systematic Review
AbstractChronic Q fever is a diagnostic challenge. Diagnosis relies on serology and/or the detection of DNA from blood or tissue samples. PET-CT identifies tissues with increased glucose metabolism, thus identifying foci of inflammation. Our aim was to review the existing literature on the use of PET-CT to help diagnose chronic Q fever. A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar to ascertain publications that included the terms ‘Positron Emission Tomography’ and ‘PET CT’ in combination with subheadings ‘chronic Q fever’ and ‘Coxiella burnetii’ within the search. To broaden our search ret...

Developing an Education Pathway for Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Rapid Diagnostic Testing: Investigating Informational and Supportive Care Needs
AbstractSeveral studies have examined the informational needs of patients undergoing the breast diagnostic process where needs are highest during testing and prior to receiving a diagnosis. To aid in the development of an education pathway, we identified patient information needs. A multi-method approach to identify areas of need and to understand when and how information should be provided to patients was undertaken. The methods included an environmental scan of consumer health information, ethnographic observation of the patient clinical experience, key informant interviews, and a needs assessment survey. The data collec...

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) is a nonprofit professional society whose primary purposes are to advance the science, education, and professional practice of medical physics. The AAPM has more than 8000 members and is the principal organization of medical physicists in the United States. The AAPM will periodically define new practice guidelines for medical physics practice to help advance the science of medical physics and to improve the quality of service to patients throughout the United States. Exi...

Take away body parts! an investigation into the use of 3D ‐printed anatomical models in undergraduate anatomy education
In conclusion, 3D‐printed anatomical models can be successfully produced from the CT data set of a recently deceased donor. These models can be used in anatomy education as a teaching tool in their own right, as well as a method for augmenting the curriculum and complementing established learning modalities, such as dissection‐based teaching.
