Role of Sonography for Evaluation of Gastrointestinal Foreign Bodies
This report describes 5 cases of foreign bodies in the digestive tract and the usefulness of sonography for real-time evaluation of foreign bodies with high spatial resolution. Physicians can use sonography along with radiography and computed tomography in cases involving foreign bodies. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Spleen Behind the Heart Complicates Lung-to-Head Ratio Measurement in Left-Sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
In fetuses with left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intrathoracic herniation of the spleen is a common occurrence. The herniated spleen can reside posterior to the left atrium of the heart in the right hemithorax and is increasingly differentiated from the lung with the use of newer sonographic equipment. Estimation of the neonatal prognosis relies on accurate measurement of fetal lung size, particularly with commonly used measurements such as the lung-to-head ratio. Here we describe how herniation of the spleen behind the heart can complicate measurement of the lung-to-head ratio on sonography and lead to overesti...

Gel Sonovaginography: A New Way of Evaluating a Variety of Local Vaginal and Cervical Disorders
Gel sonovaginography is a new way of assessing local cervical and vaginal disorders, in which regular transvaginal sonography is known to have limitations. In gel sonovaginography, 20 mL of ultrasound gel is instilled into the vagina, followed by examination with a transvaginal transducer. In a study involving 28 women with known or suspected disorders such as cervical and vaginal cancer, cervical polyps, vaginal septa, and deep infiltrating endometriosis, a substantial improvement in visualization and assessment of local lesions and structures was noted with gel sonovaginography. This simple technique appears to be valuab...

Unexpected Findings During Evaluation of Acute Pelvic Pain With Transvaginal Sonography
Transvaginal sonography is the first-line imaging modality used to evaluate acute female pelvic pain in the emergency setting because of its accessibility, lack of ionizing radiation, and excellent ability to identify reproductive tract disorders. Although the intent of transvaginal sonography is to evaluate the reproductive organs, imaging of adjacent pelvic structures is an important part of every transvaginal sonographic examination. Gastrointestinal, urologic, and vascular disorders incidentally scanned on transvaginal sonography may explain the pain for which the examination is being performed. In such cases, transvag...

Early Innovative Immersion: A Course for Pre-Medical Professions Students Using Point-of-Care Ultrasound
In preparing for medical school admissions, premedical students seek opportunities to expand their medical knowledge. Knowing what students seek and what point-of-care ultrasound offers, we created a novel educational experience using point-of-care ultrasound. The innovation has 3 goals: (1) to use point-of-care ultrasound to highlight educational concepts such as the flipped classroom, simulation, hands-on interaction, and medical exposure; (2) to work collaboratively with peers; and (3) to expose premedical students to mentoring for the medical school application process. We believe that this course could be used to enco...

Risk of Adverse Outcomes in Euploid Pregnancies With Isolated Short Fetal Femur and Humerus on Second-Trimester Sonography
Conclusions— The risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes is significant in euploid and nonanomalous pregnancies with isolated short long bones. Close follow-up is needed during pregnancy. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Frequency and Importance of Incomplete Screening Fetal Anatomic Sonography in Pregnancy
Conclusions— In this large single-center study, incomplete visualization was common in screening fetal anatomic ultrasound examinations. Recommendations for repeat imaging were nearly universal, but abnormal fetal anatomy was infrequently discovered on repeat screening. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Role of Cervical Length Measurement for Preterm Delivery Prediction in Women With Threatened Preterm Labor and Cervical Dilatation
Conclusions— Cervical length was significantly associated with the risk of preterm delivery in women presenting with threatened preterm labor and cervical dilatation of less than 3 cm. However, the predictive accuracy of cervical length as a single measure was relatively limited. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Elastographic Findings of Achilles Tendons in Asymptomatic Professional Male Volleyball Players
Conclusions— On sonography and elastography, we observed thickening and softening in Achilles tendons of athletes in comparison with healthy volunteers who had similar ages and body mass indices. These changes could be associated with early tendon degeneration. Further longitudinal studies may support this consideration. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)

Use of Angle-Independent M-Mode Sonography for Assessment of Diaphragm Displacement
Conclusions— Angle-independent M-mode sonography leads to better visualization and assessment of the left hemidiaphragm. It records lower displacement than conventional M-mode sonography in the bilateral diaphragms, likely because of fewer orientation and translation errors. Future study is indicated to assess the clinical utility of angle-independent M-mode sonography in a population with diaphragm dysfunction. (Source: Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine)
