The evolution of the modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, its reliability, and long-term visual rehabilitation prognosis: An analytical review
Ocul Surf. 2022 Mar 18;24:129-144. doi: 10.1016/j.jtos.2022.03.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn exhaustive search of the world's literature was performed to analyze all case reports and series on the modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (MOOKP) published up to January 2022. The demographic profile, the primary indication for surgery, surgical technique variations, postoperative medical management, long-term functional and anatomical outcomes, and intra- and postoperative complications were analyzed and compared. Additionally, some of the authors' (GI, VP, and GA) unpublished MOOKP cases were studied. An extensive li...

Surgical interventions for bilateral congenital cataract in children aged two years and under
CONCLUSIONS: There is no high level evidence for the effectiveness of one type of surgery for bilateral congenital cataracts over another, or whether surgery itself is better than primary aphakia. Further RCTs are required to inform modern practice about concerns, including the timing of surgery, age at which surgery should be undertaken, age for implantation of an IOL and development of complications, such as reoperations, glaucoma and retinal detachment. Standardising the methods used to measure visual function, along with objective monitoring of compliance with the use of aphakic glasses/contact lenses would greatly imp...

Dietary intake and nutritional status of people with epilepsy: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: There were limited studies on dietary intake and nutritional status in people with epilepsy. Most available studies suggested poorer status compared to non-epilepsy controls. The development of a validated dietary assessment tool specifically for epilepsy cohorts would enable comparison of findings across studies, and aid with appropriately tailoring nutrition advice to individuals with epilepsy.PMID:36702056 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109090

Interventions for acute non-arteritic central retinal artery occlusion
CONCLUSIONS: The current research suggests that proposed interventions for acute non-arteritic CRAO may not be better than observation or treatments of any kind such as eyeball massage, oxygen inhalation, tube expansion, and anticoagulation, but the evidence is uncertain. Large, well-designed RCTs are necessary to determine the most effective treatment for acute non-arteritic CRAO.PMID:36715340 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD001989.pub3

Neurofibromatosis type 1-associated optic pathway gliomas: pathogenesis and emerging treatments
Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2023 Jun;27(12):5636-5653. doi: 10.26355/eurrev_202306_32804.ABSTRACTNeurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder associated with an increased risk of developing a variety of benign and malignant tumors. Fifteen to 20% of children with NF1 are diagnosed with an optic pathway glioma (NF1-OPG) before 7 years of age, and more than half of them experience visual decline. At present, no effective therapy is available for prevention, restoration, or even stabilization of vision loss in subjects affected by NF1-OPG. This paper aims to review the main emerging pharmacological ...

What We Know About Intracranial Hypertension in Children With Syndromic Craniosynostosis
CONCLUSIONS: Development of ICH is influenced by different aspects of sCS: deflection of skull growth, obstructive sleep apnea, venous hypertension, obstruction of CSF flow, and possibly reduced CSF absorption. Problems in cognition and behavior are more likely because of genetic origin. Cortical thinning and problems in visual function are likely the result of ICH.PMID:37487059 | DOI:10.1097/SCS.0000000000009517

Vitamin A supplementation for the prevention of morbidity and mortality in infants one to six months of age.
CONCLUSIONS: There is no convincing evidence that vitamin A supplementation for infants one to six months of age results in a reduction in infant mortality or morbidity in low- and middle-income countries. There is an increased risk of bulging fontanelle with vitamin A supplementation in this age group; however, there were no reported subsequent complications because of this adverse effect. Neonatal vitamin A supplementation for the prevention of mortality and morbidity in term neonates in low and middle income countries.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the high burden of death among children younger than five years of age in low and middle income countries, and the fact that mortality in infancy is a major contributory cause, it is critical to obtain sound scientific evidence of the effect of vitamin A supplementation during the neonatal period on infant mortality and morbidity. Evidence provided in this review does not indicate a potential beneficial effect of vitamin A supplementation among neonates at birth in reducing mortality during the first six months or 12 months of life. Given this finding and the absence of a clear indication of the biologic...

Neurological Involvement in Primary Systemic Vasculitis
Conclusion Neurological involvement is a common complication of PSV (Table 1), and neurologists play an important role in the identification and diagnosis of PSV patients with otherwise unexplained neurological symptoms as their chief complaint. This article summarizes the neurological manifestations of PSV and hopes to improve neuroscientists' understanding of this broad range of diseases. TABLE 1 Table 1. Common CNS and PNS involvements of primary systemic vasculitis. Author Contributions SZ conceived the article and wrote the manuscript. DY and GT reviewed and edited the manuscript. All authors ...
