With All Eyes on BA.2, Here ’s What Experts Say Might Happen in the U.S.
For the last two years, the U.S. has been stuck in a cycle of COVID-19 case spikes and lulls. Cases rise dramatically, then drop off—and the process repeats. Several times, these surges have been preceded by rising case rates in Europe—such as before last year’s Delta wave and the start of last winter’s Omicron spike—which is why experts have been carefully monitoring a recent increase in cases there. More than 5.2 million COVID-19 infections were reported across Europe during the week ending March 20, according to World Health Organization data, and countries including the U.K. have also repo...

Fast track concepts in total knee arthroplasty: use of tranexamic acid and local intra-articular anesthesia technique.
Abstract OBJECTIVE: Fast track concepts are used to reduce the risk of perioperative and postoperative complications after total knee arthroplasty. INDICATIONS: The described concepts are used for patients with indications for the implantation of a total knee prosthesis. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Contraindications for fast track concepts are aged patients, dementia, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade IV and implantation of large revision or tumor prostheses. Contraindications for tranexamic acid are bleeding in the urinary tract, caution in cases of known epilepsy, individual risk assessment in e...

Variation in DNA-Damage Responses to an Inhalational Carcinogen (1,3-Butadiene) in Relation to Strain-Specific Differences in Chromatin Accessibility and Gene Transcription Profiles in C57BL/6J and CAST/EiJ Mice
Conclusions: These results suggest that strain-specific changes in chromatin and transcription in response to chemical exposure lead to a “compensation” for underlying genetic-driven interindividual differences in the baseline chromatin and transcriptional state. This work represents an example of how chemical and environmental exposures can be evaluated to better understand gene-by-environment interactions, and it demonstrates the important role of chromatin response in transcriptomic changes and, potentially, in deleterious effects of exposure. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1937 Received: 21 March 2017 Revis...

Maternal Exposure of BALB/c Mice to Indoor NO2 and Allergic Asthma Syndrome in Offspring at Adulthood with Evaluation of DNA Methylation Associated Th2 Polarization
Conclusions: Maternal exposure to indoor environmental NO2 causes allergic asthma-related consequences in offspring absent any subsequent lung provocation and potentiates the symptoms of allergic asthma in adult offspring following postnatal allergic sensitization and challenge; this response is associated with the Th2-based immune response and DNA methylation of the IL4 gene. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP685 Received: 19 June 2016 Revised: 07 June 2017 Accepted: 19 June 2017 Published: 13 September 2017 Address correspondence to N. An imported case of leprosy in a trainee from Indonesia to Japan
A 33-year-old Indonesian man who was visiting Japan as a trainee in agricultural sector presented to the outpatient department of dermatology with a 1-year history of progressive rash. The rash had originated on his trunk and had gradually spread to his chest, abdomen, back and arms (Figure 1). The patient was not on any medications. He also denied any history of an allergy. Polymorphic, confluent, partially raised, hypopigmented macules that had progressed slowly were observed. The lesions demonstrated associated scaling, alopecia, and anesthesia. Although a left greater auricular nerve enlargement was detected, the patie...

Effects of Coal Fly Ash Particulate Matter on the Antimicrobial Activity of Airway Surface Liquid
Conclusion: We propose that when CFA arrives at the airway, it rapidly adsorbs AMPs and creates negative complexes, thereby decreasing the functional amount of AMPs capable of killing pathogens. These results provide a novel translational insight into an early mechanism for how ambient PM increases the susceptibility of the airways to bacterial infection. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP876 Received: 27 July 2016 Revised: 30 December 2016 Accepted: 19 January 2017 Published: 05 July 2017 Address correspondence to A.
