Don ’ t Get Dragged Down By “ Zombie Cells ”
Did you watch any of the zombie shows that were all over the airways a few years back? I confess my sons and I really got into the program The Walking Dead. Watching the cast of characters try to survive in a world overrun by dead zombies was a fun way to spend some time together and wrap up a Sunday night. Typically, when I think of the word “zombie,” I’m thinking of science fact, not fiction… Zombie cells are known scientifically as senescent cells. These are dysfunctional cells that have stopped dividing and are nearing the end of their natural lives. Zombie cells are too sick and damaged to carry out the...

Food and nutrient intakes and compliance with recommendations in school-aged children in Ireland: Findings from the National Children's Food Survey II (2017-18) and changes since 2003-04
This study found that nutrient intakes among school-aged children in Ireland are generally in compliance with recommendations; however this population group have higher intakes of saturated fat, free sugars and salt, and lower intakes of dietary fibre than recommended. Furthermore, significant proportions have inadequate intakes of vitamin D, calcium, iron and folate. Some of the key dietary changes that have occurred since the NCFS (2003-04) include decreased intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juice, milk and potatoes, and increased intakes of wholemeal/brown bread, high fibre ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, porr...

Natural plant products as effective alternatives to synthetic chemicals for postharvest fruit storage management
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 May 25:1-19. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2079112. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFruits contain enormous source of vitamins that provides energy to the human body. These are also affluent in essential and vital vitamins, minerals, fiber, and health-promoting components, which has led to an increase in fruit consumption in recent years. Though fruit consumption has expanded considerably in recent years, the use of synthetic chemicals to ripen or store fruits has been steadily increasing, resulting in postharvest deterioration. Alternatives to synthetic chemicals should be considered to control thi...

Chitosan molecular weights affect anthracnose incidence and elicitation of defence-related enzymes in avocado (Persea americana) cultivar 'Fuerte'
Int J Food Microbiol. 2022 Feb 4;366:109561. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2022.109561. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnthracnose decay is one of the major causes of postharvest losses of avocados (Persea americana), during marketing. Currently, Prochloraz® fungicide is used to control anthracnose at postharvest stage which poses threat to consumer safety. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of high and low molecular weight chitosan on the control of avocado anthracnose and fruit defence mechanism. In curative inoculation, avocados '(Fuerte') were inoculated via the wounds with C. gloeosporioides spore suspension (20...

Playing with fruit: An experimental study to test the effectiveness of an online memory advergame to promote children's fruit consumption
DISCUSSION: Previous research has shown that marketing of unhealthy products via advergames affects subsequent intake of the promoted product, but the same effect is not found for healthier foods. We suggest that future research should examine if longer exposure or different forms of novel food marketing are effective in increasing the intake of healthier foods. Until now, it is unclear if advergames as a marketing technique for healthy foods have the same effectiveness on the intake of healthier food products.PMID:35114327 | DOI:10.1016/j.appet.2022.105936

Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption among adults in rural Appalachia
This study aims to expand on SSB intake patterns among adults living in Appalachia to develop policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) interventions to reduce consumption. Baseline cohort surveys were conducted to examine beverage consumption patterns of adults in one rural Appalachian county in Kentucky using a validated BEVQ-15 instrument. Ages were collapsed into three generational groups - Millennials (22-38 years), Generation X (39-54 years), and Boomers/Silents (≥55 years). Over half (n = 81; 54%) of the sample (n = 150) were Boomers/Silents. Age was a significant predictor of SSB consumption, with Millennials drin...

2021 Dietary Guidance to Improve Cardiovascular Health: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association
Circulation. 2021 Nov 2:CIR0000000000001031. doi: 10.1161/CIR.0000000000001031. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoor diet quality is strongly associated with elevated risk of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. This scientific statement emphasizes the importance of dietary patterns beyond individual foods or nutrients, underscores the critical role of nutrition early in life, presents elements of heart-healthy dietary patterns, and highlights structural challenges that impede adherence to heart-healthy dietary patterns. Evidence-based dietary pattern guidance to promote cardiometabolic health includes the followi...
